Blue Mountain Lorikeet ****s Everywhere

Hello Everyone,

I recently got a blue mountain lorikeet, hatch date was on July 2nd, 2012. It's just an early 5 months old. I have not DNA tested him yet to know if it's a boy or a girl, but I think it's a boy from his behavior. Loves humans and is tamed like no other.

Anyways, he ****s every 5 minutes. EVERY single time I put him on the ground he takes one and runs to me. He's the cutest bird, but the only problem I have is that he always ****s everywhere, it's really really inconvenient.

Any help guys?

lol Lorikeets go poop all the time, and their poo is very runny and messy. Unfortunately you picked one of the poopiest of all parrots lol

Hopefully some people with lorikeets will pop in and giv you advice on how they deal with it

Better start potty training him now before it's too late. It's well worth it. Let me know if you want some tips on how to do it.

Our lory who is 15 years old actually tells us "gotta go potty" if we are holding her and waits until we place her in one of the potty places (a perch in her cage, on her potty dish, or on the rim of the sink) before she lets loose. If her potty dish is nearby, she'll run over and use it by herself and then go back to her playing. It only takes a couple days till they get the idea and about a week until they get good at it.

Our lory can hold it for a good 30 to 45 minutes. Plus, they hold it all night, so you know it's possible. A bird's tendancy is to keep their weight light, so that's why they potty often. A lighter bird flies better.

Evenings between 8pm and our bedtime, she is out and about, spending time with my husband in one room, or me in the computer room. But she hates for me to go downstairs without her, so she stands at the top of the stairs threatening to potty on the floor. She'll start chanting "no potty on floor" over and over. I don't know if she's actually done it so I have to rush back upstairs quick!

I tried to potty train my quaker once. She learned that 'go potty' meant me setting her on a certain perch, which pissed her off completely. Needless to say, she never got potty trained, and learned to pitch a fit if anyone said the word potty Oh well...

This was the same bird who could projectile poop 6 ft from her cage - horizontally - as 'commentary' on being left at home for the odd weekend. She had great aim for any shoes left on the mat inside the back door near her cage.

COmpared to that, my red lory's potty style was easy to cope with.

OMG..I was laughing about your Quaker. Using poop as a weapon. Parrots DO that! The first time a parrot pooped on me on purpose I had a really shocked look on my face and said. "Gross parrot!" My parrot then said "Sorry" so I KNOW he meant to do it.

There are times especially when they are babies, I just can't get them to the play gym or cage or somewhere to potty right at that moment so I will hold my hand under their bum and tell them to go potty. This allows me to catch it and give the command. My fault for waiting too long or what not. When they get older they can hold it for longer period of time.

My partner Lupe had the misfortune of parrot crapping on her on purpose. Diego my Illiger's macaw was very bonded to me and would give Lupe a hard time. Once when she was bent over cleaning the grate in his cage he crapped IN HER HAIR on purpose. That was so gross. I had to help her clean it out of her hair. He use to follow her hand from above and try to crap on her hand. That little freak was so naughty. Do you know how hard it was not laugh when she came to me with bird crap in her hair. Poor Lupe!

Hahaha, oh yes these parrots are super smart! Our red lory that we once had would use the word "poop" as a cuss word, lol! We waited too long to potty train him though. I think he was a couple years old when we started to try to train him. He knew what we were trying to do and was absolutely against the idea! He actually got mad when we'd commence with potty training him and downright refused to be potty trained.

Our chattering lory was being potty trained by the breeder when it was only 6 weeks old. At that young age it didn't have full control of it's feet and couldn't sit on a perch, but it got to know what "go potty" meant, and would potty on command on a paper towel.

They can be bratty though, just like human kids Like when Sweet Pea makes the Shush sound to us sometimes. She only does it in the kitchen too, because that's where she's told to shush when she makes some loud noises in the morning.

My male housekeeper has told her "aww shut up" because she doesn't like him, so she chants "bye bye" while he's at the house cleaning. Well, she's never said "aww shut up" to me, but she occasionally says it to my husband. I find it quite interesting that she associates that phrase with a male.

You know I never did potty train Malachai. He's done it a few times on us before but I usually know when he has to go now days cause he wants off me. He would fly off to poop then come back on his own. So he have not pooped on me in a very long time. They're super super smart birds!!!! I'm impressed by him all the time, he's a very special bird!

Yep, they are smart birdies! Where does Malachai fly off to poop at? Our red lory never pooped on us, and would poop on command, but he also would have LOTS of accidents on the carpet. I wanted to decrease those types of accidents, so our chattering lory is potty trained to go to her potty dish when she's running around the house. Or she just tells us "gotta go potty". She never potties on us. She does have the occasional accident on the carpet though, but not near as much as our red lory did.

He lands on the floor and goes, there's no carpeting here so it's a easy wipe up. Then he flies back to me for more cuddles...He likes to lay in my arms....lol
