Parrots
Eclectus Parrot: Nico (male)
Jenday Conure: Kiwi (female)
Sun Conure: Charlie (male)
B&G Macaw: Blue (male)

Blue had his vet appointment today. Of course he isn’t happy! He is getting DNA sexing done. I wanted to take a poll to see who on the parrot forum is right… is Blue is a boy or girl?!?!?

I'm guessing gurl :D. Blue is such a cutie!

Hmmm…I’m going to say boy.

My vote is for rooster, no probs with infertile egg laying that way. Poor Princess Peachie is in the throes of hormonal overload right now and if she starts laying I would not be one bit surprised. Always a chance they may be fertile for her though, and I'm lookin' at YOU, Lovejoy!!!!!

That’s why I’m having Blue sexed. I really spend extra time with my female conure to discourage hormones. There are no dark places in her cage. There are no fluffy soft toys. As soon as I see her backing into her toys, and clucking she gets her cage rearranged.

I'm saying girl. My lady CAG has a very similar behavior pattern.

Did you get the results?

No, I called last Thursday as it had been a little over 2 weeks since he was tested at a vet office. They told me it takes awhile to come back, and that they would call.

Hoping for a rooster for you. Poor Peachie is currently in the throes of hormonal overload and is *constantly* squawking at the top of her lungs for Lovejoy to feed her and ..... do other things for her. The noise is deafening, I can't imagine how loud a broody mac would be!!

He also is negative for a bunch of stuff! I have to get him tested for boarding purposes

Congrats @kme3388 and here’s to a lifetime of ZERO reproductive health issues!!

My husband is convinced female parrots like male humans, and male parrots female humans because of the divide in this household 🤣 he’s been telling me for hours now that he told me Blue was a male because he likes me better

He may be right. Nameliss tries to get to my daughter's video conferences when ever she hears a male coworker. She blows kisses, and makes sweet noises. It's amusing and annoying.

My jenday conure and my only female parrot. She enjoys a good beard to preen. She’s more calm than the males in my opinion. My sun conure and macaw are both rambunctious, and are trouble makers.

When I had my Goffin's cockatoo years ago I didn't know Casper was a girl. I rehomed her to a close friend who insisted Casper was a female and it was proven when she laid an egg- the best sex test there is! Anyway, Casper was about 4 months old when my ex-husband and I got her in May of 1994 at the Bird Fair in Pomona California for only $800 (would be at least $3,000 now for a baby). She bonded with both of us but after a few years she began to be afraid of all men except my ex (she loved him). I tried a bird behaviorist but they were a man and Casper wanted nothing to do with him.

This kinda blows the theory that girl birds prefer male humans, but perhaps she was gay or bi. I have female budgies that are definitely bisexual- I've seen them mating male female style- and one lays eggs! There certainly are animals other than humans that aren't strictly heterosexual.

I know shelters have parrots that can only be adopted out to men, or women due to preferences. All of my parrots have preferences to who they let into their flock. My macaw is the worst because he’s quite nasty to people he doesn’t like. There are macaws I’ve came across that like everyone. They’ll step up for complete strangers. When I board mine when I go to pick him up I get told he try’s to bite people through the cage bars that are trying to feed him, and that they have to be quick. He also doesn’t come out of his cage. If he did he would honestly attack. They also have to close his curtains so he can’t see people walk by as it stresses him out and he will scream for hours. He bites vets they must have some sort of vet odor because he just knows and goes right after them. Blue is NOTHING like this at home, and he steps right up for me. He even requests kisses on his beak. He’s knows multiple tricks.
