Changing owners- heartbreaking, or okay?

This summer, I started considering getting a pionus when I move out. In the meantime, I've gotten to know Tangie, my mom's Senegal. Now, he's become very sweet, has stopped biting me, and I'm realizing he's exactly the kind of bird I'm looking for. He's as apartment-compatible as any pionus could be.

If I moved out and took Tangie with me, would this be detrimental to him since he's grown close to my mother? Tangie can't speak to me so I don't really know what he's thinking. I just know he's happy with both of us.

FYI, he's 17, and has been cared for by my mother since we bought him about 12 years ago. I didn't pay much attention to him, but now I take him out for a couple hours every day.

You should know in the next couple of weeks maximum. The real question is; If the parrot wants mother, will you be willing to return him?

If my future child wanted to take Pixie with them, I'd throw a hissy fit! Of course, in reality, all mothers want their children to be happy. But if you're moving out with her Senegal, your mom will lose both you and her bird in one day.

Of course, I don't know what your mom's like and how she feels about her bird. But that's how I would feel. Sorry to sound so harsh , but it may be that your mom's hiding her sorrow at potentially losing her bird.

First of all, I think Tangie sounds like a great little guy. Maybe less attitude than most Sennies too! He became a good bird for you very quickly (with effort and training techniques on your part ), not all birds turn around in that quick a time frame regardless of training. Tangie must really like you, plus has a good temperament, and that's great, but.....

It all depends on the type of relationship between your mom and Tangie. Did you ask your mom about this, or are you just assuming she'll let you take him? I think since Tangie clearly has a bond with you, it would be alright (from Tangie's point of view). I mean, rehomed birds adjust to new owners all the time. Besides, you're not 'exactly' new, and he'll still see your mom again, right? So it all depends on what your mom's point of view on this is. I'm not so much asking how bonded Tangie is to her, but how bonded your mom is to Tangie. Please keep us posted!

Hey, don't worry guys, I wouldn't take Tangie if my mom wanted to keep him! Me and my mom are close.

Personally, I'd rather get my own parrot so I could have two around. I'm only moving 20 minutes from my mother. I'd still love a pionus.

The only reason I was thinking of keeping Tangie is how easy he is to take care and how quiet he is. He peeps and chirps for a total of maybe 10 seconds a day. There would be no risk of getting the wrong bird for an apartment.

I'm glad to know you guys think he'd be okay, though. I wouldn't break my mother's heart, don't worry!

Even though I'm thinking pionus, I'd definitely consider a poicephalus now. I like the Senegals. The Capes look great, too.

Sorry if my first response came across as too harsh. I don't have kids, but I do have a bird whom I dote on (probably a bit too much).
