Hello all,

My Husband and I are considering getting a bird for our apartment he loves the Pineapple GCC and I love the look of the red factor sun's But our daughter has her heart set on a kitten. Has anyone ever raised birds and kittens together to cohabitate? The bird I am considering is still being hand fed....and the kitten is 7 weeks do you think its possible to raise together?

Thanks so much for any input!

The GCC will be a much quieter apartment bird & yes, cats & birds can live togther in the same apartment, but you need to read up on Pasturella bacteria.....it's natural flora in a cat's mouth & toxic to companion birds. The same can be said for said for hand/skin lotions, hair sprays, colognes, deodorants, hair products, furniture polishes, air fresheners and a myriad of other things.....

Lots of hand washing between handling of animals.....

yes birds and cats can live happily together I had a rescue kitten that was amazing with my lovebird the bird would preen the cat!! but like weco said be careful of cat licking the bird they shouldnt be allowed to do that! Also off topic a bit but are you resvcuing the kitten?? I would always advise people to rescue/adopt NEVER buy from a breeder cause so very many cats and dogs are being euthanized every day because people buy form breeders and not shelters! :(

Actually the apartment manager mentioned her vets office had some that needed adopted.
We have been researching birds for awhile, we have never owned any and it seems there are so many dangers to them ...but we just love going to the various pet stores and talking to the birds.

there are many dangers I learn new things almost every day! and i've owned and cared for birds almost all my life this is the best place you can go for questions or info though! Also I had two Sun Conures and they were the loudest most obnoxious birds I ever owned like all day long they would scream they are very sweet and funny playful birds but not for someone who cant stand constant noise. I currently own two GCC and they are amazing! they hardly ever make obnoxious noises and do make some very pretty noises they are the quietest birds I have ever owned mine arent tame and dont talk but I know most are very sweet and love to cuddle! they are also very good talkers I would say they are the best beginner conure and best for an apartment or for someone who likes birds but doesnt like lots of loud noise.

Having an apartment manager on your side is a plus, but a screaming sun conure quickly erodes friendship points.....

She has 2 parakeets that she offered to let us have but my husband is not fond of parakeets at all. We both seem to like the Conures although I do think Love birds are beautiful. I like the colorful birds best.... I did notice one of the places had a pionus and he/she was beautiful.

yes cthulhus_minion Jenday Conures are about as loud as a Sun they arent quite as loud but very close. and Tweepers74 lovebird are great! they are very sweet and love to cuddle but also very very playful at times and very fun to watch, they arent very loud and make nice noises but do make their noises most of the day I have 4 lovebirds right now! well 3 are mine and one is my sisters but she is so young i take care of it for her :P Pionus are gorgeous but not a bird I would recommend as a beginner bird.

I know that cats and birds have lived together successfully in some homes, but the fact is that a cat is always a predator and a bird is almost always prey. A larger parrot would have a better chance of surviving an unexpected attach, but I've seen large parrot killed by their family cats. And since you are new to bird ownership, you should start with a smaller bird. Do your research on the smaller birds as to noise levels, since conures are often given up for noise reasons. Give it serious thought on how you could maintain the two (bird and cat) in your home and protect both of them. The main thing would be to make a set of rules and always secure your bird when no one is home, keep the door to where the bird is kept closed, and the cat can have the rest of the house. When you are home, closely supervise when both are out. Good luck, I hope you find the perfect bird and a sweet kitten. :)

I don't think you want a sun conure in a apartment . You need some acreage for a sun,IMO. A cockatiel might be a good choice. Having a cat/bird ?? that depends alot on you and your family. I 'm sure you can work it out, if you want it. Rehome cockatiels are every day on CL and rescues. Find one who comes to you and you'll do fine.

Yuck, cat litter. I'm so sick of cleaning cat litter. Twelve years now. No matter what brand you use...it still stinks. Unfortunately, we will always have cats, since my son adores them. I'd pick a parrot over a cat, any day. Cats are cute...just hate the litter/clean-up. We lock up the cats and the dog when the birds are out.
