COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

Oh dear, Please stay safe Charmedbyekkie!

There are I believe 4 total quarantined cruise ships now. One is docked in New Jersey. 4 were sent to hospital(at least 2 on stretchers) and another 23 flew back to China(reports are sort of confusing). I saw a video of what was claimed to be some of the passengers being unloaded from the ship to ambulances to go to hospital, and the emts did NOT appear to be wearing even masks????? I am SO glad my husband is not currently affiliated with a department. After this blows over he can affiliate with a local department. Until recently, he was still driving back to the DC area to do a 48 hour shift with his old department 1x a month. SO thankful I don't have to worry about him in this. But I worry about the people at his old department. They are like family to him, and he said the Ebola safety training they were given was laughably inadequate. Luckily Ebola never was a real threat here, but this? Who knows.

At least the reports coming off Diamond Princess seem like the passengers are being treated as well as could be expected. Lots of good food(frequent meals), they enhanced the wifi so those in rooms without balconies or windows have more to focus on, they have been letting passengers with inner cabins up to the fresh air for 1.5 hours each(one deck at a time). Rules are: masks, gloves, scarves, hats required, no congregating in groups, no standing closer than 1 m to talk to someone. But they get fresh air under supervision of quarantine guards. I have even heard they are sending special care packages to those who have a kid or kids with them. Plus, as tests come back positive, they are removing the positive passengers to hospitals for isolation and quarantine. All things considered, it seems they are treating the passengers well.

Taiwan is searching for anyone who may have been in contact with any of the passengers though. It seems the Diamond Princess docked in Taiwan and the passengers were let off for a full day to see the sights. Japan is now asking all cruise ships to stay away. It seems 11 of the infected from Diamond Princess are Americans.

Re: Wuhan virus

I was at the Bradly International airport (LAX) on Jan 27 to pick up my wife. I spent about 1 hour standing around waiting.:22_yikes:

Last night 2/6 I started getting a soar throat. This morning is worse but no fever last night or this morning. I could have easily been exposed to the virus cuz this was before they started shutting down travel between China and the US.

Do I go in to see a Dr? I don't want them to think I am some kind of hypochondriac that thinks they have the latest disease.
I am not real worried at this point but …..

Need to make a post about my wife's homecoming and the birds reaction to her 6 week vacation.

Re: Wuhan virus

I suggest you stay home and see how things progress. Maybe call your GP and see what they think? Lots of stuff going around right now. Chances are it is regular flu or a cold, but best to stay home just in case.

ETA: hope you feel better soon!

Dr. Li Wenliang HERO

Within hours of Li Wenliang’s death, millions of Chinese, homebound in the coronavirus crisis, tried to bypass censors to post the hashtag #WeDemandFreedomOfSpeech in a remarkable but short-lived digital uprising. The users were memorializing Li, who is considered the first to sound the alarm about the deadly new virus when he leaked a Dec. 30 document from his hospital confirming a diagnosis. On Jan. 1, he was detained and silenced by Wuhan police, who accused him of spreading lies.
“A system that won’t allow truth finally kills an honest, brave, and hard-working citizen. We should be not only angered but also ashamed! Why can’t people have freedom of speech? Why can’t we question?” said one post archived by the California-based China Digital "

His last thoughts were of his family and pregnant wife, whom he fears he exposed to the virus.

My heart is touched by this very human face of Whuhan, this face of bravery, who wanted to save people. My prayers to your family, may they be safe, and continue to spread your light.

Re: Wuhan virus

Highest number if deaths in China this week, as well as large bump in reported critical cases,. ..
And those poor people on the cruise ship, cases keep climbing..
I so want this to be contained, and people of Whuhan getting back their freedom , so long to be locked down!!!

Info on disease process from JAMA
"There are biochemical indicators that a number of the body’s organ systems are likely affected and you have an inflammatory response that is disrupting their function to some extent,” Dr. Schaffner said.

The lungs, heart, liver, kidneys and the systems that control blood clotting are all affected, Dr. Schaffner said, though it is not clear that the virus itself infects organs other than the lungs.

The inflammatory response is a hallmark of a serious viral disease, he said, adding that in recent years it has become apparent that heightened inflammation from diseases like the flu can persist for a month or so after the acute illness is gone, and can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in older people."

Pay attention to how government's are responding.. as they tell the masses don't worry folks..

Can anyone find info or update on the 195 quarantined as March Airforce base? I stumpled on info that 4 adults and one young baby were hospitalized with coronavirus like symptoms... But then can't find it again. Nor updates from the people there themselves, all seems to have gone quiet. Am I paranoid?!

Re: Wuhan virus

Welcome to on Government Property (military base) quarantine! Very common, yes it will drive you nuts, but it is Standard Operation Procedure (SOP). It's not that they are, with purpose, hiding something, it's just the way it works. Add to it that they are government employees, some with specific clearances, etc... and, it quickly turns into Need To Know!

Yes, big Government, but it is the way it works...

Re: Wuhan virus

But before they ( tge people under quarantine) were postings updates on how they were doing, how they were keeping busy, what they were eating ECT... Now nothing
Also earlier in the week the CDC said they would be releasing the test results at the end of the week, it's the end if the week....these folks were supposed to be released this coming Tuesday

Yup true, but think about my statement regarding specific clearances!!! It's all about protecting individuals far beyond why the US is quickly bring individuals and their families out. Best to leave some sleeping dogs alone, by friend...

Re: Wuhan virus

Yes it's very shameful the doctor was silenced about a deadly virus that is quickly spreading. But remember when SARS came out in China and it was five months before the Gov. told anyone about it? I either read it in one of the posts here on this topic or elsewhere, but could there be the possibility this virus is a bio-weapon and intentionally released, and maybe that's why they wanted to stop the doctor? This thing is spreading too fast to completely rule that out.

Re: Wuhan virus

The thing that stands out to me is.
1. The length of time from exposer to onset of symptoms.
2. After exposer BEFORE you have any symptoms you can spread the virus.
3, The length of time after you are "well" that you can still pass on the virus.

I also read that this virus has bits of the aids virus in it. That sounds like it was a man made thing not just some random mutation of a virus that's been floating around for years.

Re: Wuhan virus

Living in San Diego, the local media carries stories about the quarantines at March AFB and Miramar Marine Corps Air Base. Essentially, they are living in decent quarters, eat 3 meals daily + snacks, and will be quarantined two weeks minimum. At least two from Miramar (one child) were immediately hospitalized. Thus far, there are 5 known infected in San Diego, all arrived directly from China.

Re: Wuhan virus

I'll tell you what scares me with this epidemic. Everything is made in China. I defy anyone to go into a retail store ( and I estimate 90% on line ) and find anything that was not Made in China. WHat is going to happen when goods made there by infected workers hits the supply chain around the world? Stuff like packaging, or products we have to handle, like tooth brushes, plastic bottles for just about everything and so forth.

Anyone have data on the sustainablity of this virus outside a host? Some viruses can shut down and go dormant until conditions are ripe.

With clarity, NO!
But, to my understanding China medical volume based products are near fully automated, minimal Human interaction /contact. As you know, the leading facilities are fully automated, if there is a concern it's the black market facilities that is a concern regarding all facets of the process. You're a better source regarding that activity than I.
To my following, this variate has a limited active period outside the body in the open /dry environment. But, the information continues to be influx. As you know, in process inventory (shipping /warehousing) lead-time is commonly several months.

'Boats, thats the thing - lead time to market is not months. Maybe years ago for heavy bulky stuff. Its weeks,or less these days. Not as much automation as you might think over there, people power is often cheaper that automating a process. Hey I hope I am dead wrong in this. I do know my staff in Hong Kong and Shenzhen are scared shirtless. We have cancelled audits, customer meetings and my own trip, sheduled for begining of March to the main land. The HK staf in particular have zero faith in what the PRC reports for people infected and the death rate.

"The HK staf in particular have zero faith in what the PRC reports for people infected and the death rate."

By a factor of ten? By a factor of 100? By 1000?

Well stated, Laura. Dr. Wenliang is a hero and unintentional martyr. Hopefully his passing will rally citizens and rattle the CCS in meaningful ways.

Re: Wuhan virus

omg, we just moved to Orange.

Please be safe! I would imagine the Singapore government will react swiftly and apply the most modern of medical techniques as needed.

Re: Wuhan virus

40 cases in Singapore now??!And some not linked to previous known cases! Omg be careful. Do you have any supplies stored up? This is stressful.

I think Diamond Princess has 71 confirmed now. And Anthem of the Seas is docked in New Jersey until Monday at the earliest now. Stilll waiting on test results for the screened passengers. Did I already mention they disembarked the other passengers?? Without even telling them about the potential exposure. They found out thru the media. And one woman posted on twitter she and her mom are very sick and requested coronavirus testing, but were denied it!! This seems like a colossal blunder to me.

Still no word on what port may have accepted the Westerdam, but she is barreling towards an unnamed port who, apparently, will accept them if no passport holder has been to China in 14 days. Unsubstantiated rumors are thinking Singapore.

Not much word out of the World Dream anchored outside Hong Kong. Tho, not too much word out of much of China these days. 2 citizen journalists appear to have just "vanished" in Wuhan. One while allegedly on his way to one of the new hospitals, according to his mother.

On a more lighthearted note, here is a picture of one of our barn cats angry about the wet snow but still insisting on being right near us, even when out in the donkey pasture cleaning his feet.

Re: Wuhan virus

Bug N Flock,
It seems US is also not being forthcoming, several cars are hospitalized, but no release of positive cases.

Seems like it is spreads very easily, now that we can track cases outside of China. Plus 4 of the new ten cases in are in ICU in Singapore, and many other cases report severe symptoms about 9 days after infection. I linked earlier info from JAMA that reported this is a serious virus causes systemic organ problems, and clotting issues.

Re: Wuhan virus

I feel so very sorry for Dr Li Wenliang the original whistle blower on this thing, and his pregnant widow and five year old son who he leaves behind. He was treated most shamefully by his government which appears to be more interested in preserving it’s own reputation and economy.
