COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

The crappy thing is, many American schools aren't taking it seriously. Nearby, a bunch of kids were exposed at a dance, and the school is set to be closed for 1 day (even though the dance wasn't at the school). Now...how does that make sense? A bunch of kids at the school were exposed, but even one day later, you have up to 13+ days where you can be without symptoms/spreading the illness. They should close for the full incubation period if the threat is legitimate (and it is---given the scenario).

They also are sending home letters that are like, "keep your kid home if he gets a fever over 100 or a severe, dry cough" but 90% of kids aren't going to develop those symptoms, even when infected...From what I understand, it looks more like a cold in young people. People are still showing up to work sick and children with colds and coughs aren't being sent home without fevers. The point is, kids don't always show symptoms.

Doesn't change the fact that they are vectors for community transmission and the whole 14-day window is hugely important here...I feel like people just aren't taking it seriously when it comes to containing the problem early- on. Yes, it may seem extreme to shut a school for 2 weeks, BUT it is less extreme than having a community of secretly infected running around and spurring a pandemic.

Re: Wuhan virus

Has anyone found their news muzzled regarding the coronavirus?
Our cases more than doubled overall. My news just said and I quote " cases in Florida have gone up" no mention of total cases or places in the state with cases, then we were told to wash our hands and stay home if sick.
Is it because we have Concorde de elegance and international car show going on with cars from 300 global locations on show? Or because we have spring breakers, or because we have the PGA going on?

Does your local news cover cases?
I missed the world news, did they cover cases by state numbers, or say we climbed by 90 cases today?

Like the National News Media would allow itself to be muzzled by this administration... Not happening! That said, this weekend was filled with tons of back-stepping to get their stories kind of on the same page. Plus, they have been busy trying to determine how they are going to cover the primary elections after last week Tuesday's huge turn-around and their totally missing the swing away from Bernie..

Also, as so clearly seen, National News Media is not particularly good with numbers - 'basic math is difficult'. And, then there is the continual problem with the inconsistency of States reporting numbers, let alone at a consistent time or even day...

Our local news is 70% national news. So, unless you where looking, it was thin this last week-end.

Re: Wuhan virus

I've been searching around, are there any cases of parrots being infected by owners with covid-19? I'm not finding any, maybe its mammal only???? That would be a relief.

Re: Wuhan virus

That would be a relief. They confirmed that that dog in Hong Kong caught it. Yipe!

One of our 5 dogs was coughing 2 days ago. Had me looking at him sideways, lol, but I think he must have just helped himself to an egg or some eggshells. I think he has an allergy or something, he coughs after eating eggs. Shrug. He is 11 now, so a mild allergy, this is something that has gone on for his whole egg-eating life.

Trying to get my mom to take some time off work. She is a speech pathologist working in the public school system. Kids are unlikely to stay home, especially at her particular school. It is mostly children from poor immigrant homes. The kids in some cases don't have a good home setting, or are the only english speakers in their households. They are unlikely to be kept home for a cold. At least she cancels sessions with kids who are obviously sick, but that wont be good enough in this situation. I sent her this

:ttps://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/high-risk-complications.html

Some of these kids do literally choose between staying home sick and being able to eat at school. Many teachers keep granola bars or a change of clothes in their offices. My mom often used to stop by mcdonalds in the AM and get a bunch of breakfast sandwiches to take in for the kids.

Ohhhh I'm so worried for her and everyone else!! We are at this point literally days away from shutting it down... keeps getting pushed back. We are doing feed shop, hay people, hardware store, picking up packages. I think that is all that is left. We are running out of space to shove food into, I think we are good on that at this point... Stuff is getting scary out there. Be safe, everyone.

Noodles, Laura, Anyone else who is/was ill: how are you guys feeling? Rest lots, drink lots, eat well!

Re: Wuhan virus

Bug I want to hear about the Filly!!
Thanks, fever gone, didn't develop the pox, feeling pretty normal, dry cough persists tho... ( Feeling uch more comfortable was a slight cold)

I've watched other countries go from 30 cases to 7,000 cases in a week....this is how expionital growth works... To date we've tested close to 2000 people, s d have over 566 cases... They are working on catching up with tests, but every day delayed doubles cases as each case passes it to about three people ( often much more) ...

I read a scary article but didn't save to source. That said with the amount of cases Iran has exported , and the amount they have reported, ( hey we know testing can be hard to keep up) their are likely millions of cases , and their have been many leaks that their death toll is much higher...
The globe just has do many hot spots now..

I hope we are looks after our military abroad..

Sailboats,
Yes reporting is all over the place on numbers of cases, in the US and in local states.. today the news have exact numbers as known, s d put up a state msp showing wre they are. Our state seems to be getting better organized, and now tells us pending cases to.

"Stock trading was halted for 15 minutes on Monday after the S&P 500 plummeted more than 7% in the first minutes of trading. The halt was caused by an automatic circuit breaker safety mechanism that kicked in to prevent a free fall amid the sell-off."

Whoah. We took money from our retirement account, as much as we could without facing steep penalties. Wish we had taken the rest. The penalties are nothing compared to what has been lost from it now.

Sent that to my mom, and stated that one way or another if her retirement money disappears I or my brother would make sure she got by alright. Threw in a joke to lighten the mood. But my brother and I have talked about this before. He owns a condo with his domestic partner and they have a guest room. I and hubbs own 60 acres, guest room, and plenty of space to even build her her own house if she prefers. We are on the same page that if at all possible, no nursing homes are in her future. And ideally, she might move here or there before she was in need of so much help. We are a pretty close family, and either my brother or I would love to have her live with us. Not how we wanted it to happen, but hey silver lining to stock market crash I suppose.

I'm hopeful that the economy will recover, though. There are millions who would be facing a much more uncertain future if their retirement money or whatever other money just disappeared.

The filly is good! Sorry, I saw there was a new post in the "horse owners" thread, but didn't check it I don't think... things have been hectic here.

She is a little spooky over things I hope she gets used to soon... we have a split in our "driveway" post field: the ford or the bridge. Eitherway is just the same loop shaped driveway. Going up the bridge she is fine. If you drive up the ford side she gets really spooked and starts running in a panic. You'd think Butters not even looking up would help reassure her, but no. Also bringing in Freedom's new cage spooked her. Tarps she is getting used to though. I think it is about time to reread some Temple Grandin books on working with livestock, and make time for other reading on horse psychology, etc. She is still a total sweetheart lovebug thougj and most of the time is calm. But surprising things scare her. :(

Fortunately, I moved 700k into solid annuities! Did that to give wife piece of mind! I still have a large amount in stocks, but the plan is to leave it alone for 30ish years!

Re: Wuhan virus

Your Filly is a baby, they go through that sillly stage were all new thing are OMG! Keep setting s good example and Butters will have a good guidance for her to follow.

CNN, has stepped up to face the truth, we are in a Pandemic, as many world leaders and experts have also claimed. I hope using that word inspired action around the globe.
( O I wish the stick market could just take a vacation, and let us focus on people)

Starting today, you will notice that CNN is using the term pandemic to describe the current coronavirus outbreak. It is not a decision we take lightly. While we know it sounds alarming, it should not cause panic.

A few words of caution:

I'm on the younger side in these forums (mid 30's), with quite a lot of family wealth invested across indexed funds, ETFs, individual stocks, bonds, CDs, etc. I would not recommend pulling all your money out of the markets, unless you are heavily over-exposed in retail or oil. I've reinvested lately in energy (as in, electrical supply -utilities), real-estate, and tech. Annuities are also a good idea for those forty and up. Unless you are currently experiencing a major health crisis that needs to be immediately payed for or your assets (home, whatever) are forfeit, it's never a good idea to sell off during a free-fall. What actually is a good idea, is to calmly wait - and buy once or just before the market bottoms out. Which it will - then it will climb again. I can't speak to 401ks or managed funds - I've never bothered with those, as I grew up learning that it's best to have as much direct control over these things as possible, with the exception of things like Vanguard High-Dividend funds or Long Term-Tax-Exempt funds.

Yes, it is scary watching the value of your investments fall, but remember losses are only realized on the sale. If you are that worried, you should not have put your money in something as volatile as the market anyway -it's better off in short term Treasury notes (not bonds, but notes with a duration of less than a year) or having paid off whatever debt you've accumulated. There is no greater freedom than in owning your home outright (I bought my home for 460k here in NYC all cash a few years into the 'Great Recession' which was laughably overblown...and don't really care, but now there are crazy persons wanting to give me north of 1,000,000 for it - I live in it, and a mortgage was never involved).

It is good not only to exercise calm with regards to sound hygiene practices, but also good financial ones, as well. Keep your debt low, stockpile material moderately (but don't hoard - do you really want everyone around you not to have soap?) and stay positive.

I asked our avian vet about this actually, last week. I'd heard that Covid 19 is related to the Avian flu so I was worried about the fids. Dr E said that it would be possible for parrots to get us sick, but not the other way around. Our fids are safe. On the other hand, he also said if I got sick and sneezed on my hands then pet my fids, then my hubby pets the fids, he'll probably catch what I had because my cooties were on the fid.

Re: Wuhan virus

112 countries out of 195 countries hav cases almost all are increasing, doubling and more....
News showed a healthy 30 year old who had no other medical condition in critical condition, in new York Also our first case that was one if the evacuated from China was in their thirties and healthy, developed the sever acute Respiratory pneumonia from the virus need oxygen and hospital support did recover.
This disease can cause pneumonia in 20% if people of all ages other than Children (rare) it is serious for us all, and deadly for elderly....

I'm so disappoint my survival stash will just have to wait.....

Re: Wuhan virus

Doctor on the front line in Italy

“I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the dangerousness of what is happening does not reach people I shudder,” he said.
The boards with the names of the patients, of different colors depending on the operating unit, are now all red and instead of surgery you see the diagnosis, which is always the damned same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia.”

The doctor urged people not to describe COVID-19 as a bad case of the flu.

Macchini noted that some of his colleagues have become infected themselves and then infected their relatives who “are already struggling between life and death.”

“So be patient, you can’t go to the theater, museums or the gym. Try to have pity on the myriad of old people you could exterminate,” he said.

Also from America ( didn't save source sorry , saved earlier in thresd)

About 80% of people who contract this new coronavirus will feel sick, but ultimately be just fine. It’s the other 20% who get really, really sick that worry so many of us in the infectious diseases field. A lot of these critically ill patients wind up needing to be hospitalized for their pneumonia-like illnesses. They typically require critical care and ventilation – special machines that help them breathe. And some need to stay on ventilators for weeks at a time. It’s that portion of patients that’s most concerning. Depending how many cases develop here in the U.S., providing that level of care for that many people over a number of weeks runs the risk of overwhelming the nation’s health care system pretty quickly. "

The COVID-19 , is now called
SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Also puts 20% in the hospital with pneumoia. Partly because of the viruses affinity for the cilia structures in the lung. It uses those cells to reproduce destroying those cells in that process. Filling the lungs with cellular debris. Decreasing the lungs ability to process oxygen. Leaving holes in the lungs, in what maybe permanent damage. Then comes the body's immune response to the invader. This happens at about day 9 after you first have just mild symptoms. This immune response from the body can be massive in some people causing more damage to the lungs, then liver and kidneys. As the body says we must kill this new threat and anything related to the threat collateral damage be d******... ( Will cite https://api.nationalgeographic.com/.../02/here-is-what-coronavirus-does-to-the-body

It will take weeks for the death toll to catch up in final outcomes.

A woman in her 60s died Monday morning, March 9, from COVID-19 at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, the first fatality due to the new coronavirus to occur in Santa Clara County.

She had been hospitalized for several weeks, according to a statement from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.https://mv-voice.com/news/2020/03/0...-due-to-new-coronavirus-at-el-camino-hospital

Re: Wuhan virus

I’m a pretty healthy individual and so are most of my family members, but I have some family members who are immunocompromised for various reasons, and this virus is very scary for us. One of them has been fighting a chest infection since February. Her doctor gave her a month of antibiotics and a steroid pack to help. If she acquired COVID-19, it could easily prove fatal. Wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and avoid crowds if you can help it!

Re: Wuhan virus

One of my best friends in another state, her coworker just got placed in quarantine, unclear if my freind will have to go to quarantine too......

And think about this
Italy had three confirmed covid-19 cases three weeks ago. Yes, three !

New Rochelle in New York locked down 1 mile containment...

Re: Wuhan virus

6 cases in my state now. Some only 3 counties over. Small counties. We are going to a hardware store for building materials, the feed shop to pick up the order we placed yesterday, and to pick up packages we have ordered. Other than that, we are shutting it down. At least the 2 in Lexington, had no travel or exposure history. Community transmission cases.

According to the local news just now, which is talking nonstop about the coronavirus now. Scary stuff.

The 3-year-old in Collin County is among the youngest patients in the U.S. to have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. The World Health

Also, lets have the facts please! Who knows how many more people would have taken this seriously , and lives saved if you gave facts.

WHO told Science using the name SARS could create "unnecessary fear,” so the organization was going to refer to the disease as COVID-19

Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome spells it out for you

Re: Wuhan virus

Has anyone else noticed the change in the north America map of the virus?

It no longer shows where the cases are located other than "the state totals"
California's map use to differentiate Los Angeles or Long Beach or San Francisco.
Now there is just one big dot in the center of the state that gives the total.

Hmm. Is someone trying to avoid something? If WE know what areas are focal centers for the virus maybe we would like to AVOID those areas.

Yup, 'WHO' is lost in international Politics!!! Sadly, they have defined theirselves as no longer a trusted source...
