She is on her way to the ER. My wife said she is very tired and bobbed her head a couple times. I am trying to find flights back home. i just hope she is okay, it has been a couple days.

I'm praying she's ok too, all my hopes are with you!! 🙏 🙏 🙏

What happy news! How and where did you find her?

Your experience reminds me of a story. When I was about 13 years old (a long time ago!) I was swimming in our pool when I saw a scarlet macaw fly onto our roof. I ran into the house and told my father. We couldn’t catch the bird, but he went on a mission to find the owner—-and he succeeded.

Life lesson: Never give up hope! So happy for you.

She made her way into a office building and was hiding in one of the rooms. The security guard found her during rounds and recognized her from the fliers and he called the animal rescue whom my wife had also notified. The vet said her labs look moderately dehydrated and we have to monitor her, but no signs of bacterial infection so far and no signs of fecal parasites so far. I must have cried for 10 minutes straight. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO POSTED AND KEPT US IN THEIR PRAYERS.

That is a crazy story! Possibly even stranger than my heat-seeking macaw who flew to a huge parabolic satellite tracking dish in search of warmth! I suppose wayward macaws do not need employee badges or top secret security clearances to enter restricted areas! 🤣

After I scooped up Alex Bird my cockatiel who'd got away from me, I took him straight to the vets. I don't remember them doing any tests on him(they might have tho), but I do remember they gave him baytril as a preventative measure. That was two decades ago tho, it's just interesting to note the differences I think. I wonder if it's just different vets, because of the size difference in the birds, or different practices around antibiotics use now 🤔

Incredible news. I’m so happy to hear it!

I checked with a avian vet tech neighbor. She recommends taking care of your macaw as if she's in a modified quarantine. And as if she's recovering from a mild illness. After all severe stress has many very negative effects. Keep her a little warmer. Limit stimulation to things that are calming. Observe her for next 45 days. Some things are air borne with average Incubation of 10-45 days. She said and I say again congratulations on her return.

I would think it unlikely that she would pick up a bird illness in an office building or even outdoors for a day or two unless she hung out with pigeons or seagulls. It's not like a macaw could sit on a dirty bird feeder. I guess you can't be too careful.

Hard enough to lose a pet like this, so much worse when you blame yourself. I hate to even click on these kinds of posts, too sad. But please don’t give up. Though I have never lost a bird, I have found two! A cockatiel landed on one of us in a grocery store parking lot, and a little budgie landed on a two story windowsill where I worked, was able to open the window and get him to step on a stick. I am sure others have mentioned lost parrot websites, and post like crazy everywhere you can about lost pets in general. Offer a reward if you can. And watch any local bird for sale posts, someone could find your bird and hope to make some money selling him…..

Oops, just read you found her!! So so SO happy for you!!! I hope anyone in your situation will not give up….and though people get mad about this, please put all parrots in a harness if you take them outdoors. Even birds with clipped wings can fly. Those YouTube videos or people taking their birds out for free flight make me crazy. All it takes is one loud noise or one hawk or eagle, and it’s all over. Yes, birds fly, but these are not wild birds. Their lives are not ruined because we don’t let them fly. We can enrich their lives in other ways. It would never be worth the risk for me.
