Introducing Yuri! Ona’s New Sister!

How is Yuri's foot? Do you think Ona may get jealous? She's so used to being the center of your attention (birdwise). And what will Yuri think when she sees her new Mama fawning over Ona? Don't dogs get jealous sometimes? I wonder if birds get jealous. Fortunately my budgies don't. They're plenty of room on my body for multiple budgies to perch at once and they're not very needy except for Joey who can be a real pest! It's my fault for coddling her too much and for too long as a baby because she has two deformed feet that weren't a problem at all once she grew up and learned how to best use them.

Her foot is still about the same. Still using front toes, back facing forward. I think there is still a chance the vet will recommend removing the little object in her stomach, or doing another X-ray to make sure it's still there. We will see.

I'm not sure if Ona will get jealous! I think the biggest thing I'm worried about is her getting territorial over her stuff. I do know she really likes other birds. I'm not sure!

Just got back from taking in Yuri for her ABV re-draw. Hoping that the results come back fast so that I can still let them meet this weekend They want to put a splint on her little foot to prevent the toes from curling. I will be taking her in tomorrow morning for that.

Poor little sweetheart, she must be getting a bit sick of those vet visits by now, but my goodness she seems to be taking it all in her stride! Hope she gets to meet her big sister soon!!

Please take pictures of the splint so we can see it. I hope she doesn't mind it too much. I know that baby birds in the nest that get splayed feet can get mini handcuffs on their legs to hold them in proper position before the defect becomes permanent and it works really well.

What a good baby! Yuri and I are twins- I finally got a walking boot on my fractured left foot today after 17 days of walking on it!

Wellll I already had to take off the splint She had been chewing it and freed one of her front toes. The vet said to take it off so I did. I did some physical therapy with her, stretching out her toes and encouraging her to grip with them. It seemed to help.

She is really good at balloon pop! She popped so many balloons on my phone. She’s better at it than Ona.

I am taking Miss Yuri back again tomorrow to have the foot re wrapped with a different kind of tape. I’m asking why didn’t they use that the first time….

She and Ona have been screaming back and forth all day long today. They are dying to see each other. I think the ABV results should be ready by tomorrow!

Ona helped us get Yuri’s big new stainless steel cage put together last night. She had to approve it first for her sister.

VERY disappointingly, the ABV results did not come in Friday. But, we did compromise by moving Yuri’s temp cage downstairs and letting her and Ona talk and see each other through cages. They are both very happy and Ona is absolutely dying to get closer to Yuri. They are definitely enjoying the company.

I will admit Yuri did jump on Ona’s cage once, and Ona jumped on Yuri’s a couple times. We are rotating out time. Both are just dying to meet.

Yesterday when Yuri was on my shoulder I thought she said “peekaboo”. I’ve never said that to her before. Then today…

Someone must have taught her!

She eats carrots and almonds now.

Well it’s not great news. They did X-Ray her and the feet look fine BUT there is a little spec in her stomach of a foreign body she has ingested. They are thinking it could be something metallic and could be zinc toxicity, which can cause nerve issues and lameness. They drew blood to send off for tests to see if that’s it. It’s possible it’s not related and just a soft tissue injury but the zinc is highly likely. Also sent of for ABV test, which I had planned to do next week anyway.

I am very fortunate to have a stellar Exoctic vet nearby and my bird sitter was the vet tech today. Now we just have to wait for results….. my least favorite thing.

She did take her first bath when we got home. She must have needed to wash the vet off. And you can see her little curled foot here too

She is acting well and eating lots still. Doesn’t act like she’s in pain or anything.

But I just went through all this zinc stuff with Ona not that long ago! Ugh! They said it’s likely whatever she ate she did so at the pet store.
