Looking for possible bird sitter?

They are going to begin work on my street soon, and I am afraid they are going to be repaving at some point. I am concerned about the fumes, and wondering if I might need to find a place for Juliette to go while they are completing that part. I hate to board her, as she gets very stressed when left in her cage for too long without quality time (sitting on somebody and preening, scritches, etc). Is there any known network to find a responsible bird owner in a local area that might be able to take her in overnight so that she doesn't have to be boarded in a bird store?

Can you try any avian vet clinics near you? I got lucky, mine offers a boarding service via the daughter of the ex-owner, you might get just as lucky!

Why not stay in a motel with her for one night? She's a pretty quiet bird- they'll never know she's there.

It's a thought...but I don't know yet how long it's going to take. The whole project is something like three months of ripping up water pipes and generally disturbing the peace. But I'm guessing there will be blacktop at the end. Hopefully that would be just a few days. Hopefully the whole three months aren't stinky. I don't know what I would do if that were the case.

Just because you can smell the tar doesn't mean she's inhaling dangerous amounts of fumes. There's too much air outdoors for the fumes to get too concentrated. All products that generate fumes recommend adequate Ventilation.

I totally understand your concern about fumes and Juliette. A lot of birds have died from fumes indoors and it's heartbreaking, but as I said, as long as the fumes are originating outdoors where there is "endless" air for ventilation Juliette isn't in danger. Just think of all the wild birds that would be dead all over the street if outdoor fumes could kill them. Think of all the car, bus and truck fumes that pigeons living in polluted cities must inhale every day and we still have plenty of arguably healthy looking pigeons in NYC! The big cities in India like New Dehli are very polluted and IRNs are everywhere. London is pretty polluted and IRNs are getting very common in city parks.

You can minimize the smell by keeping your windows shut while they're working with tar or moving her cage to a room in a part of the house away from the street.

There was another post from someone a few days ago from another member worrying about the smell of cigarette smoke from a closed room down the hall affecting her birds. Smelling the scent of cigarette smoke isn't the same as actually inhaling second hand cigarette smoke which is at very least arguably harmful. Some people are claiming that second hand smoke outdoors is hurting their health but that's not a real danger- they just don't like the smell. Personally, I'd rather smell a cigarette than some peoples' colognes. I wouldn't spray cologne in a room where birds are kept.

Thank you! I called the bird people today and they said she should be okay as long as the windows are shut. I hated the thought of having to board her as she's so attached and still a baby. I think I'm still paranoid after the gasoline spill evacuation I had to do with Ollie.
