He was in the bedroom and I went out the front door to check on something real quick. In a second, he came out of the bedroom and landed on my shoulder, then as I scrambled to get in and close the door it happened. He took off into the wild and man he really is a good flier. Last I saw him he was head up and North, about 50 miles per hour. Poor fid could be anywhere by now. Let me tell you I instantly change my tune about clipping! If I ever see Dusty again he's going in for a clip right away. Man, I was so careful too but it literally takes one second of oops to ruin everything. :(

I drove around the block with the windows down whistling "tequila" hoping to hear him answer, but no such luck. Here's the craigslist ad I just put up http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/laf/5740037785.html

So sorry to hear! I went and got a couple of those hippy looking bead doors and hung them in all my doors that lead outside because my daughters come in and out so much. They fall back in to place pretty much instantly, and it's worked well so far.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I took his cage outside just in case he finds his way home. I had thought about the bead curtain also but there's no way to do that at my place. The door opens up right in front of the TV so anything hanging by the door would really be in the way all the time. There's no way to rearrange the room to do that =(

Very sorry for your loss. Hope that Dusty finds his way back home!

Regarding the bead strings at the door; Here in the Great White North we commonly have inner and outer doors. The outer door is a 'storm' door with the inner door being the standard door. The storm door swings out and the standard door swings in. This leaves a space of about 2 - 4" (50 - 100 mm) depending on wall construction that one could hang the bead strings.

Please edit your ad and remove the leg band number. That is something only you know to identify your bird.

I am so sorry to hear about Dusty, especially after having read about your adventures choosing and caring for him.

Take heart that cockatiels usually fare well outdoors, and can and do get found.

Friends of mine lost one of theirs for over a month, then found him 11 miles away in perfectly good health. My mom lost one she was birdsitting (he's a senior cockatiel even), and he got recovered too after a week.

A bird that knows how to fly is going to have a better chance of out maneuvering predators and machinery, and also have more courage to fly down to humans who can help him.

I hope Dusty finds his way back to you soon.

I am so sorry to hear this:( Sending prayers that you are able to find Dusty soon.

I'm so sorry Dusty took off. It can happen in a heartbeat and it can happen to any of us. I hope you have Dusty safe and back home very soon.

Thanks much you guys. Feeling pretty hopeless and guilty right now for not taking better care and for not having him clipped. The rain has been picking up pretty much since he got out, so hopefully he won't go too far and hopefully he'll be tucked away in a tree where a hawk won't see him. The hawks worry me more than anything, we seem to have a lot of them around here.

Thanks especially for the encouragement about finding lost tiels after some time has passed, I'll definitely be out first thing in the morning whistling tequila for him and won't give up on him too soon.

While it is raining he may be kept low, hiding in a tree!
Go door to door and get the word out! For you, put up with the rain and keep looking!

I lost my JoJo for 10 minutes, when she got out! She flew to my neighbors, where I hang out with her. I was a basket case for hours!

Yes. And dont forget to look today at dusk. If I lived in Dallas id help look.

Surely the rain is good? Keep the distance covered lower? Chin up and hopes high

I work evenings, but I'll be taking off early today. I made several printouts of my cragslist ad and will put them up in some strategic places while I'm out looking for Dusty this afternoon/evening.

He really doesn't like showers so rain in the area may well keep him tucked away until we find him. I suppose that might be a blessing, and fortunately it's not supposed to be excessively hot, cold or windy for a while.
