Dactyl is a bearded Barbet, and a friend of a friend is downsizing his flock, and I ended up with him. He is so cool, looks prehistoric somehow. He has suh an appetite! He eats 3 huge bowls of fruit and veggies a day, as well as his Beo pellets. He gets 4 superworms every other day (which are GROSS!). His poop is very watery, but at least he squirts down and not out the side of the cage.
He is 5 years old, and I am so thrilled to have him join our flock:)
Sorry for the kind of blurry pics, I was trying not to freak him out too bad.

Thank you! I love him already, and literally worked on what to name him for the 2 weeks before we were able to pick him up. He is the first one I had ever seen as well:)

I love the name Dactyl for him :). His facial 'hair' is crazy, but he is a beautiful bird! That is the same one they have at one of the bird stores here. He's been there a long time.

How exciting to have an exotic softbill in the collection. Are they related to the Toucans and Aracaris?

OMG, Dactyl is beyond AWESOME!!!! :smile015:

Superworms???? 4 of them each day? I happen to know how HUGE they are, so my jaw is literally on the floor right this minute. :11: Does he at least eat them whole, or does he pick them apart first? :32:

BEAUTIFUL addition, Terry!!! SO gorgeous!!! :D

WOW! He looks prehistoric in a really good way! What a face, incredible coloring too. I love the name, it fits.

My understanding is that he is in the same family as Toucans:) He is just so different from everyone else, that is crazy that there is one in a store near you! I need to plan a trip to sunny Cali soon and check out your pet stores!

He is eating 4 superworms every other day, but I know he would eat them every day if I gave them to him! I am trying to follow the feeding schedule he was on, but am wondering if I should increase it? Do you have any idea? I feel like he is still hungry, but man, he is eating more than anyone else!
He eats them whole...grabs it, tosses it back in his beak, and gulps it down, it is cool to watch.

Thanks Allee! I would love to eventually get him into a huge flight, I think he would love that. He is actually playing with some toys, which surprised me.

OOPS, sorry, I missed the part 'every other day'.

If he seems hungry, I'd personally increase it to every day, yes. :32: :32: Hey, at least he eats 'em whole, without picking them apart and flinging them, HAHAHAH.

You DO need to plan a trip one day when you can get away to SoCali! ...and I need to come to BC when it ever happens I can get away! You would LOVE the stores down here. We're lucky in this area to see at some time or another, just about any species available! North San Diego takes about an hour and a half to drive to, and they have several large bird stores down there that I love to go to about once a year.

Wow, Im glad I saw this post. What an incredible boy, he is stunning. I would love to have one, but your description of a worm stuffing, poop squirting, eating machine definitely has me taking a bit of a step back. Hopefully when he settles in we can get more pics.

What a beautiful and unusual looking bird... never seen one of these guys before.

Do they have the same health issues as toucans? Or are they hardier?

Wow Terry he is stunning. I have never heard of these before. Have to go google now. Hope Dactyl settles in well and can not wait see some more pics. :)

Terry, I'm afraid if I was close enough Dactyl would get sick of me standing near his cage and staring at him. I'm fascinated, and it must be fun to watch him gulp down his worms. He's a small bird to have such a ravenous appetite.

So I guess that makes him TERRY'S DACTYL... (Duh!) I'm a little slow today. But eventually I get it.

Thanks for the laugh, Mark! I'm really slow today, I missed that completely.

Wow, what wouldn't I give to visit Dactyl up close and personal? He's gorgeous, Terry! We - um - need more pics, don't we everyone?
