New Electus owner

Kiwi will be 2 years old in April. He was very messy when I weaned him. He still is today when he eats fresh vegetables and fruit! The only difference is that now he will wipe his own beak off after he is done eating, he never did that during his weaning/childhood phase. Although I assume that might be a learned behavior, since he got so pissed at me for wiping his beak with a paper towel when he was younger XD

I meant to say in my first post that you should be glad he is bonding with you so quickly. It's a good sign! I assume English is not your first language.
:) HI Josk

No english is not my first language, I was raise on Spanish and grow up on French, now strugling into Chineese Mandarin :11:

Welcome! Your new baby is just beautiful! He looks almost identical in size to my Oliver who is 15 months old...

Hi Josk, drlisaort & all

Well is been 15 days now so i wish to make a report!

My boy who must be around 6 months old, just started to trust me since yesterday
He finally accepts food from my hand and he does not shake as much when on my arm

I avoid to insist in creating a very close bond for the time been, since i will be gone for 21 days in janauary 16 and also I read is better for them to learn to be independant

So far he has not giving me any negative behavor problem, but must admit he is very shy on his new envirement, when i let him out of his cage some time he trys to fly but unfortuanaly he came cleaped so he goes directly to the floor, then he trys to use me as an elevetor to rescu him from floor and perch him some where

He is not very good at walking, it may be because i have marbol foors who are very sleepery or because he is not use to

Diet it took me like 12 days to acept some fruits and very litel veggies, so far is not a great eater and of course he wishes i give him more seeds

What I been doing is, in the morning no seeds to start with, i give him a slice of aplle, one or 2 grapes, a pice of carrot and some red peper all in big pieces

The carrot he bites it all over but he defenitly is not eating it, more less same with the gree or red pepers

Then what is in our lunch time i ad some small seeds into his left overs also ad some times green peas or what ever we are having

At night time i do the same but i reduce seeds actualy im giving him no more than a table spoon of small seeds in all

Today i half cook a sweet potato that i mix with his left over and half boil egg, he went for the egg but did not touche the sweet potato

I am warrring he is not geting enough proteins and i am afraid his fetheres become grey or black as i read that in other forums ( he eats well his aple, grapes and starting to love boil egg)

Any sugestions, or I just keep this way until he finaly goes for the rest?

Thanks for sharing

Great to hear your update on your boy! It sounds like you are doing great! As for protein, I tend to give Oliver beans and rice to make a complete protein in the evening mixed in with fresh kale, peas, and carrots and a mush I buy from Roudybush. During the day he gets fresh fruits in one dish and fresh veggies in the other. In addition I give him one table spoon of seed and pellets along with broken cinnamon, a few kernels of popcorn, some dry fruit for his forage wheel to entertain him while I'm working. So far, it works beautifully. If Oliver had his druthers he'd prefer ALL seed and pellets--it's like a drug for him...

Hey, Solrac13. Good to hear that your boy is starting to bond with you! As for suggestions, I'll tell you exactly what a few good people from this forum told me when I asked the same thing: variety is the key! This has definitely worked for my 5.5 month old.

I give him a large variety of foods including pomegranates, several varieties of squash, carrots (important for vitamin A and calcium!), kale, jalapeno peppers, bell peppers, Jamaican hot peppers, brown rice, quinoa, oats, cucumber, hard-boiled egg with crushed shell for protein and calcium, corn (both frozen and on the cob), whole wheat bread, pumpkin (with seeds), papaya (again, with seeds), blueberries, kiwi, mangoes, apples, brussels sprouts and broccoli (both in moderation since I've heard too much of either can affect digestion).

Also, to top off his dietary requirements, I've begun giving him Volkman Fancy Soak and Simmer as well. This mixture contains a good mixture of various peas, beans, oats, wheat and more.

I've been lucky in that Bixby eats pretty much EVERYTHING, but the variety will also give you the chance to observe which foods your bird most enjoys. I tend to feed him at least 4 or 5 types at a time, including carrots or pumpkin at almost every meal to cover eclectus' greater need for vitamin A. Hope this helps!

Jade Update

Hello @ ALL

Well I be leaving China for 21 days the day after tomorrow, I have try everything is possible to leave Jade in the best shape physically and mentally

Is been over 21 days Jade came to me and he has improved a lot

First day he came to me he had some symptoms who made me very worry

-Shaking
-Breathing with mouth open
-Sneezing
-No to Loud weezing after trying to flying
-Lack of appetite
-Bright green runny poop occasionally

Well it came out to be nothing but stress, is just since 4 days or so he seems relax event do he is not 100 percent relax, they are still many worries in his little brain and i think that will take few more months to completely adapt

So far he comes to my arm as soon i offer him, he is not trying to intimidate me any more when I approach to his food dishes, he allows me to touch his back when while walking from one room to another in order to perch him

He allows me to take him to the shower and he is not afraid of it anymore

Now the downer is that after trying to get him into veggies and fruit has been a NO NO I try everything with very little of success, at time i put him on a diet 24 hrs with out food to force him to eat his veggies but it was a NO NO so I ended up cracking and feed him seeds 1 by one during 2 hours and thats how i gain his trust, ever since we became friends (so he win lol)

I even try pellets who was a NO NO too lol.......... So any way at list he is eating more and more of his seeds and he enjoys eating apple and grapes after his seeds, some times if he is in the mood he likes cooked carrot, cooked corn, raw he does not like it!

His new thing is making his own soup, on his water bowl, he sinks the apelle and even his seeds lol wish makes me change his water 3 times a day now

The good point is that he seems comfortable with everybody who comes in the house, so thats a plus because beginning day after tomorrow its not going to be me who will feed him, perch him, shower him and so on!

Well I hope i will find him ok after 21 day of been gone

Your baby looks gorgeous!!! Have a safe trip. I look forward to your updates when you return...

Jade does look gorgeous! And from the sounds of it, he's socialized enough to cope with your extended absence. Enjoy your trip!

Oh, and a little suggestion for you to try upon your return. Perhaps you could try putting his favorite seeds all over the foods you would like him to eat. Maybe even partially inserted. Like a sunflower seed sticking out of a blueberry or something. Or putting them all together in a foraging toy. If he accidentally tastes these other fruits and vegetables while trying to get at the seeds, he might find he actually likes them. Who knows?

Thanks @ALL & Drlisaort and Anansi

BTW will love to see some new pics of your boys!!!!!!!!

PS Anasi I have done that already it worked for few days and then was a NO NO, promise I will work hard on his healthy diet on my way back!!!

Hello meet Ollie he is a red sided baby eky who is almost 10 weeks. What would be the best types of fruit to give him? Currently he is on formula, seeds, corn, pees ect however doesn't eat much fruit when I feed him apple and banana ect any more tips on what babies love to eat that is sweet?

Hello, Ollie13, and welcome to the forum!

If you look back over page three of this thread, you'll see lots of eclectus food suggestions from both myself and drlisaort. Try a bit of everything you see there. Variety really is important.

That said, eclectus tend to LOVE pomegranates, and they are very nutritious as well. Grapes are also a favorite.

But don't skimp on the veggies! Especially carrots, pumpkin and peppers for their vitamin A content. Eclectus need a lot of vitamin A. (Natural vitamin A. Don't supplement.)

Good luck with Ollie, and keep us updated.

Hello and thanks for the welcome. Will be giving Ollie pomegranate and some carrots as soon as I get home. Very excited to see how he reacts. Thanks for your help!

Hello Ollie seems to like the foods you've recommended however he isn't taking much fruit by himself unless he is hungry and I am feeding him by hand. Is it because he is still a baby? He is about 10 weeks. 34 cms long and over 325 grams in weight since I weighed him last. I'm going to weigh him tonight again just to make sure he is in the healthy weight range :) I've been feeling his chest and it is spongy.

Wait, I missed it in your first post, but you said Ollie is only 10 weeks?!? Is he even fully weaned? If he is, he is FAR ahead of where my eclectus was at that age. Bixby was over 4 months when he was finally weaned.

Now, if you are still giving him formula, then all is well. You definitely want him to start ingesting fruits and veggies at this stage, anyhow. And then, as he begins refusing the formula, you would start transitioning him over toward fruits, veggies and grains. (If you are hand-feeding him, you probably already know this. But just in case...)

If, on the other hand, he was sold to you as completely weaned, you're going to want to check his weight daily to watch for any weight fluctuations. I'm not saying it's impossible for an eclectus to be weaned at just over 2 months, because I really just don't know, but on average they take between 3 and 5 months. Some even as long as seven! So you'll want to watch carefully just in case he was prematurely weaned. Listen for hunger cries and watch for begging postures as well.

Please keep us updated on Ollie's progress.

Hello yes Ollie is only 10 weeks and is not fully weaned as he is still having some formula but starting to reject it a bit now. I'm still getting those hunger cries yes. I weighed him after he ate and he is now 352 grams which is in the healthy range. I've been cooking his veges and feeding him with a spoon so it's easier for him to eat them all mushy and seams to enjoy when I do that even with banana.

I missed that too on Ollie's age! Oliver was not released to come home to me until he was 5 months old. He was fully weaned! He did not get solids (apple chunks, etc...) until he was well into his fourth month. I definitely would speak to your vet before giving him solids. This is a very tricky age and requires great precision on how much to feed him.

:)Hello again and thanks for the heads up will do so thanks again :green:

Hello would anyone know if it's normal for my baby eky Ollie to attack/ look scared to some little ball toys with bells inside them? I want to train him fetch and so fourth eventually but currently he bites them when I jungle them in front of him the closer they get to his beak for example? Here we go again with his beak crunching noises haha...
