most likely we will keep this guy/gal..but i did post a few ads for the owner to respond to...
He/she will definitely not get a lack of attention in this house...my wife and I make it a point to ensure all our critters get personal attention and are literaly spoiled. We have 15 different tarantula species from various countries, a python, a kingsnake, 2 rats, 2 bearded dragons, and a fish tank full of african Cichlids....If the owner comes forward thats great, but if not, I can guarantee this beauty will be well taken care of. I plan on having a cage, but allowing free roam once he/she is able to fly again.

thats great to read :p nuts for ever trying to get into the stick tank lol or is tapping the fish tank, so you might not want to let sonny have to much of a free roam, best supervised roam lol for the damage she's done so far throught out house, you'd think my nut was a pack of macaws!:11: :09::D

That's too funny!..:p We will definitely supervise!..thank you so much for your concern and assistance...

Maybe a naughty child cut the tail feathers, no excuse, but it happens.

If this was my baby and I lost him i'd be going frantic looking for him. I am sure that you will take care of him well but do your best to find his mom.

I have been trying to locate the parents, but still nothing....He/she is really enjoying the possible new home and gets along great with the whole family...So, it's good to know that if he/she is staying with us, that it's ok...

Just make sure you do post to find the parents or turn him into your shelter. It is considered unlawful to keep him if you get caught. The owners can pursue you in court.

Another thing, im not a clipping fan either, BUT sometimes you must in order to train or prevent them from flying out the door in which that is how you got ahold of him. A lot of us here have many years of experience and we don't always agree on everything each other do. I don't think anyone trying to make excuses for another bird owner they don't know. But stuffs do happen. Have you ever thought his tail feathers might of been fractured and they decided to trim them instead of yanking? Do you think he would come to you the way he did if he was mis-treated? A mis-treated bird will most likely bite you. Those are some things to think about!

Mike has a good point about contacting a rescue. Unfortunately, some people are crazy and apparently incapable of taking responsiblity for their actions. So many rescues are desparate for foster homes and permanent adoptions that you may be able to just keep him.

As others have said, aside from the tail clip, he seems to be in pretty good shape. Regardless, he was lucky to find his way to you. He was either out due to a mistake or someone just threw him out. He probably wouldn't have survived long in that condition.

Our local shelter that rescues huskies got shut down cause they post a dog's pic to be adopted when the dog was stolen. The owner of the dog saw the pic and took them to court, she won and the rescue was closed down for good. No more husky rescue here.....

There's a difference from a stray and a rescued animal! You must pursue the proper owners at all times. Sometimes we may not agree with how the owners treats them, we can only turn them in cause we don't actually have the power to do anything about it. I've done it too many times before, speaking from experience...

We can suggest to our forum members on how to do things or an educational bit for people that are new but to tell a member they must do something is a little strong. Sir sid I hope you are ok with all these suggestions.

I appreciate all the help and suggestions...Actually, my wife works for a Petstore, which also has a pet-rescue, and a animal hospital located on the premise and that's where this bird first went. After a couple days of them trying to find the owner then she brought him/her home for us to foster...which we are still trying to also find the owners. The person that brought him/her in originally said it just walked in her backdoor, most likely because it heard her 3 macaws...So they figured it would have been one of the neighbors, but no such luck...Anyways, bottom line, all the proper steps have been taken in the locating of the original owners of this beautiful bird and it looks as though we may be the fortunate ones to give him/her a new loving home.
Again, thanks all for the help and concern. :)

Our local rescuers wouldn't even touch them until it is given ok by the city pound. I've called many rescues here before. It might be because of that law suit, but the rescuers told me its the law, same with the pound. Only time they can go into rescue is when the owners sign them over or they pick them up at the pound after certain amount of days of them being in the pound for owners to pick them up.

Sounds like you guys can give him a great home but those things are to be considered. With my birds, my vet writes down all band numbers. If at anytime they were stolen and a vet checks it from the registry, they come back to me!

Well today I think we found out it's a boy...He gets puffy and kinda dances when my wife gets close to him, and when she picked him up today he rubbed his butt back and forth on her which from what she said left something "wet" on her...also, until today I got along with the guy, but today as soon as he gets in my hand he starts biting the heck outta my thumb..OUCH!...It first started when I had him on my shoulder and opened the fridge...right away he acted like he wanted something and was crawling down my arm trying to get in to the fridge...I told him, "no, no, no.." and shut the fridge and he bit the heck outta me!...LOL...I thought that was the end of that, but now it seems everytime I pick him up, (if he lets me) he bites...Would I be correct in the assumption that this is a boy..?

Don't tell me he wants trying to mate with her???? LoL

@ sirsid ~~ as far as as the tail feather go.. I noticed no one mentioned that the bird may have ran into someone while roaming around and some kids may have found it funny to clip the tail.. Many things can be the case for the tail feathers issue. As far as the owners still not being found, I hope that if they honestly do miss their bird that they are found. If for any reason the bird was not meant to be with them they it sounds like the bird is in an amazing home.

Parrots require much more attention than many of your other pets you have. I say this because my mothers ex husband had a collection like yours. LOL If any of your other pets are known to escape or have ever I'd triple the locks or make 100% sure they cannot get out, as a snake would love bird as a meal. One member said supervised roam, I agree with that always being best, as many birds will find anything to chew on .. wires etc...

Also it is possible that the bird got out of it's original home and someone as you did found him and did that to its wings to keep it from getting out.. then he found his freedom trying to get home put to no avail due to not having his flying wings couldn't get back. That's when your wife's friend found him and gave him to your wife. Many scenarios are available for this beautiful bird's wings.

Many people have been bird owners for many many years. Most of the advice is the best for your new temporary/permanent family member. With your wife working at a pet store she should know a little more about what the bird may or may-not need. They have books on the different birds in the pet stores, I advise you and your wife buy one and sit down and read it from front to back so you have an idea on what your bird will need. Best of Luck! He's a cutie!

It sure sounds like that's the case...so now he won't let me touch him! ...I'm going to pursue a female companion for him...

Any female you may pick may not bond with your bird and notice I said your bird. They really like to pick their own mates as we do. He has chosen your wife. You cannot accurately sex a bird by its actions, the DNA test is the best.

I love the "scenarios" that you all have provided...each feather was cut separately and somewhat uneven which convinces me this was intentional...
Thanks for the concern, but we have already researched parrots and it's needs, as we have been wanting one for quite some time...we are not novice pet owners...as far as parrots requiring much more attention than my other pets, I don't think so...maybe more actual interaction, but not attention. All my tarantulas are sub-tropical/tropical and need their humidity and temperature levels monitored constantly. I spend a few hours daily making sure each terrarium/vivarium is up to par, and watering and feeding. I also handle some of them when permitted.
All my pets get their own personal time no matter what it is spider, snake, parrot, dragon, rat etc...People thing we're weird, but we just love animals and want to make them happy! :)

You are exactly right, and I am only assuming it's a male. I feel bad that he doesn't like to interact with me anymore as we were friend the first 3 days...So I will be patient and respect his choice and slowly gain his friendship back hopefully.

If you end up keeping him, there is hope for you to bond with him. When we first picked up Savannah I was the one to handle her initially and she was afraid of my husband. The next day she decided that she liked him better and would try to bite me any time he was near. Which figures considering she is my bird and he doesn't even handle her that often. haha.

Anyway, I did a lot of bonding with her when he wasn't home. You need "your time" with the bird so that they know you have something to offer. Be it signing, dancing, eating, or just sitting on the couch watching some tv. I sit outside every morning with Savannah and eat breakfast. She LOVES blueberries and almonds so I defiantly won her over with her stomach. It also would help if your wife stepped out of the picture until he begins trusting you again. Or, at the very least, did not give him any treats.

Savannah now likes both me and my husband and will walk between our shoulders when we are sitting on the couch. The most important thing you need to remember when handling a bird is know the signs. Your best bet to avoid biting is to know when it is going to happen. Pay attention to what makes the bird uncomfortable and learn his limits.

@ skycon

Thank you so much for the advice! Very much appreciated...

My wife goes to work part-time, so I will take advantage of that time to bond with "Sonny"...

There seems to be something in the fridge he likes, or maybe it's just the cool air he likes, but I noticed if someone has them on their shoulder when opening the fridge, he gets semi-excited and crawls down your arm attempting to get into the fridge. I let him in on the top shelf, and he fluffs his feathers and kinda moves about in a circle...Actually, the first time he bit me was when I wouldn't allow him in the fridge!....So, I'm thinking maybe the previous owner may have stored treats in the fridge causing the excitement..:D
