Hello,

I am new to the forums and new to the parrot owning world. We just got a nanday conure two days ago. She is almost four months old. I call it a she but I dont actually know. She was acting fine, or at least as far as I could tell, but yesterday she started being fluffed up all the time and head bobbing constantly and flitting her wings. She is still doing it today. And while she was decimating a piece of apple (Im not sure if that's normal either? She didn't look like she ate any of it! Just picked it apart) she pooped four times. The first three were small and very dark green and the last one was bright green and runny. And my daughter just informed me that she took another runny poo right now. She doesn't seem interested in her food much, i got her ZuPreem smart selects. She will eat fruits and I am thinking since she doesn't seem interested in the pellet food, if her just eating the fruits and veggies is giving her icky poo. I dont know if all of this should be worrying and if I should contact the pet store that I got her from or find a vet? I cant find any avian vets in my area, however I do have dogs that go to a good vet so maybe I should just take her there?

Sorry this is so long. Just really worried that something is wrong, and within the first two days? That would be awful. :( Is there any way to attach a video of what she has been doing?

Thanks for your help.

Hello there!

Yes it sounds like she is not eating the new food you're giving her. You should call the pet store and ask what exactly they were feeding her, and get that to start her out on. Even if its a seed mix which can be loaded with sunflower seeds and some unhealthy stuff its important to transition them from their old food to something new, as it will be very difficult to start them on something completely new.

A lot of birds don't like pellet s if they have never been offered it before, same with fruits and veggies, so its important you get ahold of the pet store and get food she was just eating so she can begin gaining weight with something she knows and loves.

The bobbing and flitting of the wings is normal, baby bird behavior. They grow out of it with age, especially as they learn to eat on their own. Are you sure this baby is 100% weaned? Did you see it eating on its own in the pet store?

Where are you located? Any new bird should be brought to be checked over by a vet (avian vet preferred) to make sure they are healthy moving forward. They can also weigh them and test for disease. DNA tests can be purchased online quite cheaply and you send in a drop of dried blood on paper and they get it that way. They're around $10.

Where are you located? We have members from all over the world who could help you find an avian vet. It's important to find an avian vet so you can get specialized care from someone who really knows parrots well.

My birds love veggies much more than they love fruits -- perhaps your conure would enjoy some vegetables over the fruits you've tried to serve. My birds love when I make cornbread muffin mix with chopped up veggies inside (peas, carrots, green beans, broccoli and jalapenos for example were in my last batch) and they love them served warm!

You need to get her eating right away. Feed exactly what the pet store was feeding and worry about healthy later.
The behavior does sound like baby bird begging for food, or attention.
Only give a little fruit as this can through off digestive system if they eat to much. A littleooser stool after eating fruit is normal.
If she was eating seeds you need to get the seedmix the let store was feeding Tonight!! 4 months should be weaned but fi d out if they have hand feeding.....
You can offer cooked oatmeal, scrambled eggs, try playing with and offering the food with your fingers
If your bird doesn't eat in the morning, you need to go to an Avain vet specialist, who only treats birds, you might have to drive an hour or two if one is not near. Vets who see cat dogs and birds just aren't good enough, it's worth the drive and the price to avain vet care that makes a difference for your bird.
Good luck, hopefully offer a seed mix for parrots works!!! Then later you can switch to healthy

Yes-- feed what the store was feeding during adjustment and make sure you are not using ANY chemicals/aerosols/candles/fresheners around your bird..No Teflon/PTFE/PFOA either (not even in the same house)...
