New to this birdy thing

Well when you jump you jump Big! not a Zon person myself but I like them from his pic looks like that beak is long might need a good bob so maybe a trip to the vet for wings, nails, and beak bob are in order let the vet be the bad guy there. good luck and keep us updated.

My poor husband is a trooper I am known to be a bit of an animal collector. I always stop to help a stray and when I hear a sob story like this little guy I have to step in! I will have to take him to the vet next week to see about his beak and nails (his nails are crazy long!!!) I have really enjoyed getting to know him and can't wait to introduce my hubby to our new member when he gets home this weekend.

I noticed in his picture that his beak is kind of long. Assuming it isn't just the angle of the picture, you might consider a blood chemistry to make sure he isn't working on a liver issue.
Chances are pretty good he will allow you to pick him up some day. Just go slow and ask him first. He will step up when he's ready. Do keep him away from your child until you get to know his moods a lot better. Some amazons do really well with children. But yellow napes, particularly male yellow napes can be very aggressive and predictably unpredictable. They are capable of seriously nasty bites, so I would make sure your child knows not to stick his hands in the cage and be very careful about allowing your child to handle him. Frankly if I had a kid, out of my 5 amazons, I have only one that I would allow a child to handle and only in certain short and controlled situations.

For diet, Zupreem Natural is the brand I usually use. I do not get the kind with the pretty colors and honestly I think its just the people that like the pretty colors. The bird could care less and based on my own little bit of experience, I think some birds can have a nasty reaction to the artificial colors. Pellets are a good base diet but you should really be working on getting him to eat his veggies. I would guess that about 25-50% of his diet should be veggies and sprouted or cooked beans and grains. Since he's a rehome, remember unless he takes to those pellets right away you might need to gradually introduce them by slowly reducing the amount of seed until he is eating his pellets. Just dumping a bunch of pellets into his bowl might be dangerous if he's always eaten a seed only diet and doesn't know they are food. Mine also get a very large helping of veggies 6-7 days a week too.

Today being a lot more quiet then yesterday is going really well or maybe because we are more use to each other. Made my first birdy recipe Malcolm loved it and I sliced up a plum for him too. I tried some veggies last night he was not a fan so tonight we will be trying different things. I will have to get him to the vet monday if they have an opening to see about his beak.

You will get there just find the things he likes and he will love you for it in due time he will be your bestest friend :)

I go to Stahl Exotics in Fairfax, VA. It's a trek, I won't lie, but Dr. Medlin, who sees Kazi, is wonderful and all the staff up there are excellent and well-informed. You'll definitely want to find an avian vet or an avian experienced regular vet. Birds are not like cats and dogs physiologically and many vets don't know how to treat, or handle them, correctly. Avian vets are not cheap, but they're worth their weight in gold, especially when your bird starts doing something that seems alarming and you need to know if he's dying or just being a parrot :) It's nice to be able to pick up the phone and talk to someone with loads of bird experience that way!

I didn't realize there were so many WV parronts here! We should have a meet and greet or something!

We should! That would be lots of fun. I called and talked to my four legged babies vet they gave me a number to call that would be good for mal to go to.

Malcolm goes to the vet Tuesday to get checked out and to have his nails and beak trimmed. However, I am a little concerned because I found this strange green colored poop with white stuff mixed it it. Malcom has seeds and yesterday he had some salad with lettuce, green pepper, and carrots for dinner. Should his dropping he funny colors?

You really are new. No worry. His poop sounds fine. True, we can learn a lot about our birds health by their droppings. You wanna watch for watery loose droppings and the color of the droppings. Keep in mind if you feed him lots of watery vegetables and fruits (ie. lettuce, apples, watermelon, melons) his poop will be watery. Their poop will take on colors of the foods they eat as well. You will get to know what's normal or not normal for your little guy. I have a one year old female DYH. They definitely are characters. Just go slow like everyone is advising and things should work out! Good luck.

Oh good! I wasn't sure if maybe I was giving him to much fresh food for his little body. Thanks for the reassurance.

No rhubarb or avocado (if you weren't already aware) but pretty much everything else fruit/veggie-wise is fair game. If he's willing to try new stuff consider yourself lucky! A lot of parrots are phobic about new things, including foods. Kazi can be, but he's usually up for trying anything as long as I try it first and prove it's not poison :D

Malcolm is being a pig! Everything I give him he eats I made some food and froze it for convience. If we are eating in front of him he goes nuts until he gets a nibble. The only thing he won't try is a bath...which I find strange since I thought birds love baths. Malcom has even learnt a new saying since being here "I love you" lol

It may be the way you're presenting the bath. Kazi is very picky. Only the shower will do and only on a certain setting and only at a certain temperature. Then he'll use all the hot water if I'll let him.

Try spray bottles on mist sprayed above his head, a dish of big leafy greens floating in water, the sink sprayer, the shower. You'll figure out what he likes bath-wise, because yes, most of them LOVE baths about as much as they like to eat! :D

I will have to try that Liz. I am super excited because today Mal allowed me to scratch him!!!! And he is constanly yelling I love you probably because when he does I start to act like a crazy person lol! My husband came home and it cracks me watching him and Mal interact Rick never dances or talks baby was singing and dancing to make Malcolm talk to him.
By now you all realize that I really have no clue about birds, but I am learning slowly thanks to you all. I got a new question for you all. I have to go to PA to start looking for a new home we have a camper up there already. Do you think Malcolm would be ok traveling with me and staying in the camper we have a smaller cage and basically the only time he would be in it would be while he sleeps and while I am out.

Yes i think he'll be better off traveling with you and being exposed to new things then being stuck in a cage alone at home. My pet zons travel well and hate being at home alone. IMO the more new things the better.

Henpecked do you do anything special to make them more comfortable?

Put them in their travel cage every day. Use it as a playstation. They can adapt to alot if they have a piece of home to use as a safe spot. that and the more you exspose them too the more they can handle.

Brittney, I bet he'd love to travel with you. Kazi goes out several times a week with me. He loves traveling in the car and going new places. He doesn't always love meeting new people yet, but we're working on that!

My husband isn't a joker either, but he's slowly starting to loosen up around Kazi. I think seeing me act like a fool around him is helping. Kazi is traveling with us (11 hours!) in the car to GA for Christmas this year. He'll get a whole week at Grandma's house. Grandma has a slight bird phobia, so this will be fun. She is looking forward to meeting him though.

It sounds like you're doing right by Mal so far. I'm so glad you found us here! What a lucky boy he is!

Gosh I hope by Christmas mal is use to traveling we will be going to MM around then to see my hubby's family. My mother in law is just as an animal lover as i am.
I am so glad I found you all I had no idea what I was taking on with him, but its worth it and I already love him! We should meet up for lunch sometime and you can share some birdy knowledge and stories

Welcome to the forum!

Amazons are wonderful - I rescued 2 of them about a year ago and, of course, they were blue-fronts (see my sign in name? - absolutely zero bird experience). Yep, it's an adventure w/Amazons but they are fun!

Baths are important. I bought a spray bottle, brand new, and I put water in it and let it sit for 12 to 24 hours. I put a perch in the bottom of the shower (so if they're scared they won't hurt themselves, they're close to the floor). I put the amazon on the perch. Then I spray the mist UP into the air above the Amazon's head so it drifts down gently on the bird. MC adores having a bath - will stretch his wings and tilt his little neck and such. Secret - glares at me and sits there (of course, that's Secret most of his/her life!).

I can tell you I've seen Amazons that don't have baths and their feathers are dusky and sad looking. You will be amazed at the difference a bath makes.

I only give mine a bath once a week (work/life).

There are video's on you tube about birds and baths, too.
