non banded bird?

I saw a Blue Crowned Conure in our Pet Shop the other day and he was adorable.. He came to the front of the Cage and put his head down for me to pet him and then he looked at me with his head to the side, as if to say " Are you going to take me Home"

If I had have had the space for another Cage I may have been tempted :)

Interesting and I had worried about that. It wouldn't be a problem for me now, but if we travel or move in retirement, it could pose a problem. What kind of "paperwork" are you referring to? Just a document from the breeder stating age, breeder id, etc? Sorry for your situation, by the way!

Yes, just proof that she was bred in the US and not a wild-caught bird. You are supposed to get some sort of paperwork with the breeders information when you buy a bird from a breeder, or even through a third-party. My mother's Macaw that was bought from a breeder has a band and paperwork that reflects the documented information associated with the band.

Aahhhh hhhaaaa! CHEATER! Codie knew you were cheating thats why she was cranky this morning! Hhehehe (off subject sorry) :p

Hhmmm I wouldnt think not having a band would hinder travel in any way. I live in California and have a non-banded bird and have seen lots of non banded birds. The one bird I did have that had a band just had the breeders initials and a 3 digit number that meant nothing to anyone except the breeder. Birds that are banded can sometimes get their band off or have it removed. Bands really mean nothing. To travel with your bird you need a vet health certificate. But even when I moved from another state to California I was not questioned at the border check station and of all the times Ive travelled with my birds in and out of california coming back in at the checkpoints I have NEVER been asked about them. And they ride in their travel cage in the front passenger seat, so they were in plain view of the checkpoint people. Dont stress about a non banded bird. No biggy!

I beg to differ, completely. My husband and I have done extensive research into this issue. It's about the Appendix numbering. Goffin's are considering an Appendix I, which means that the birds are considered to be in a "Near Threatened" state, which prohibits the exportation of birds and catching them in the wild to keep as pets. Those born in captivity are fine, but you have to be able to prove that. I am unable to do so, which means that should I travel into California, which has strict laws if you're caught, I could face jail time and have Sugar confiscated. Not all states have similarly strict laws, but California does.

Ok so upon doing a little more research, some states require that you have a permit with your bird if you will be in that state for more than 48hrs. If the bird does not have a band one can be put on. I could not find where it states on any site (of course I dis not check out ALL the states) where you must have a band to enter the state, ALL states to have laws in place that you MUST have a vet certificate to enter the state. Anyways I think the band thing is up to you, juat check out your personal states laws amd regulations.

That's for most birds. I don't have access to the bookmarked website where my husband found what he did about California in regards to the Appendix I birds. It's not necessarily about having a freaking band on them, it's about having the information that is associated with the band, which is the part I think you either missed or aren't understanding (no offense).

Recently I traveled from WA State to Arizona via CA and when I came to the CA border I was stopped to and questioned regarding my birds. The Boarder Patrol simply wanted to verify that my birds where not Quakers or one other species (can't remember). When I asked why those specific birds where not allowed I was told that they are extremely destructive to crops etc and therefore were not permitted import into or through the state.

I'd like to reiterate what some others have already said that a band will not help to track the bird to the owner. There is not world/nation wide database regarding bird band and owner. The only people that may have that specific birds info is the breeder or shop they were bred or sold from and of course you the owner.

Yeah, we've already mapped out our travel Itinerary and we will be going the "long" way, through Utah, to get to AZ so we can avoid CA and any potential issues and heartache :(

I've never heard of any travel restrictions for cockatoos....

Only travel restrictions I've heard about have been with quakers, indian ringnecks, golden conures and maybe nandays - dependent on the state.

Many amazons, military macaws, scarlets, red front macaws and others are also on Appendix 1, and I've never heard before of any of these common (in captivity) species having travel restrictions put on them, whether or not it can be proven where these birds were bred. The only thing I can find is in regards to travelling internationally...

Anyway, for a blue crown conure, it shouldn't matter whether or not the bird is banded! The majority of my birds have not had bands, including many that came from pet stores. My cherry head didn't have a band but my mitred did, and it was because of his band that I was able to find out when he was born (well, what year), that his parents were wild caught imports (so he's a first generation captive bred!), and the general location he was born at (he never moved far from where he was born until I adopted him). I honestly wish I could have found out the same information, or more, via my cherry head.

Well, I just put a deposit on an un-banded baby blue crowned conure! I am sooo excited. I will get a hatch certificate and all of that and plan on getting him/her microchipped. Getting DNA done this week to find out sex. He is a sweetheart! Came to all of my children with ease and snuggled under my chin. I was so surprised that I cried. I'm glad that I didn't let the band issue keep me from seeing him. He seems to be the perfect bird for me!!! We are picking him up on Monday so I will post pictures then.
