Hi there!

I have a beautiful macaw, and I'm really doing my research to keep her safe. I have no Teflon cookware (switched to stainless steel)..However, my oven is a 1983 Sears Continuous Self Cleaning oven. I was advised that it should be safe to use as long as I don't run in above 400 F.

"A 1983 Sears (Kenmore) continuous cleaning oven features a porous ceramic enamel coating. This specialized finish contains catalytic materials, such as metal oxides, which help break down light grease splatters during regular baking temperatures."

I don't have any clue if it is safe for using near my parrot....Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Yikes you gotta an old one. It's safe below 400. I'd recommend a temp gage to be sure with that age. I don't let my newer oven go above 325 to be safe around my CAG. It is recommended to manually clean. I read some wear ceramic pan with water, heat to 200 for 30-40 min for steam then clean oven. It avoids toxic fumes. Disadvantages you gotta clean oven before build up or you'll be there for days! We have a new oven and can't use cleaning option. Read that somewhere and that's what I do. Let the oven cool. My daughter was in a hurry. It's only water thinking. Heavy duty build up the old, old stand by that great great used on cast iron stove was baking soda paste.

Yes, the oven seems to run a little hot, so I want to max it out at 350 possibly. Will also move her to a bedroom while we bake just to be safe. I definitely will get a gauge to make sure it actually isn't going above 400. Would you think moving her to a different room will be extra protection?

No fumes travel. Don't remember the physics. Think how those drafts that find you. That's how fumes travel. Checking oven temp is the big thing. If you like to bake that's number one on your list. It wouldn't hurt to check temp to check accuracy of your oven gauge. Even during use. Some run hot as they age during cycles. Some cold as they cycle. Learned that from years of baking bread in apartment ovens. Isn't thinking fun?
