Hello! A pigeon with a red band on its leg is probably a domestic racing , homing or pet pigeon

Agree. I've seen them released at racing shows. Talked to a racer. He said they're tame. But a few get 'lost' due to weather or mood. There is always hope they'll return for food and safe roost. Or another person who knows will return them. Not likely but hope.

He flew away when I got too close (roughly 10 ft away). I had just turned on my sprinkler, and he was there when I turned around. I had never seen 2 red bands on any bird so I was curious what it was. Are racing pigeons not “tame”? There’s no way I could have captured him, and I’ve gotten ahold of a few injured crows to bring into a wild life rehabilitation center in my state.

My neighbor had carrier/racing pigeons. He told me they will find there way home. I wouldn't worry to much about the one you saw. May have just been resting, getting a drink, who knows.

I think it's a family band to ID to the breeder at a glance who the parents ate so they don't accidentally inbreeding them. My show budgie breeders friends use two bands. One to ID the bird and the breeder and a color coded family band.
