Pickles - kakariki
Mochi - quaker
Dipper - green cheek conure
My pet Pickles (kakariki) has had yellowish toes and strange looking scales for about a month. I suspected it was mites at first and used scaly face and feet treatment according to the instructions. However, a week has passed and it hasn't changed at all... I'm starting to worry that he might have a liver disease?

I'm thinking of taking him to a vet but I also wanted to ask if anyone knows what might be causing this?

The only thing i can think of is an uncontrolled bout with protozoa or fatty liver disease, caused by poor nutrition so maybe give the bird supplements with his food.

Oh I see, what supplements would you recommend?
Pickles' diet has been pellets for at least 3 years and I often give him apples, broccoli, and spinach as well.

I know when he younger he was living off seeds until he was 3 which I feared might have contributed to the problem? He's about 7 years old now so that was almost half his life on seeds...

you may need to put him on a low fat diet and give him some Milk Thistle seed and Dandelion Root, and that should help

I really do not believe that a seed diet that ended near four years ago is contributing to what you are seeing today. It is just as possible that your pellet diet may be over enriching your Parrot's diet.

I am guessing that you have not had your Parrot into an Avian Vet in a while and having a full spectrum blood test will define the health status of your parrot.

In the meantime consider upsizing the perches in the cage and any remote perches. See getting to the Foot of the problem, which is part of the Thread: I Love Amazons... which is near the top of the Amazon Forum.

The formations near /at the nail appear abnormal and could be growths. Time to set-up a Vet Visit!

Your trying to blame it on natural food which he ate 3 years ago. I don't think so. Kakarikis are granivores. Their supposed to eat a grain.

What he eats now is more likely the cause. The consumption of processed foods and lack of natural grain is what his been eating for the last 3 years the poor fella
