self mutilating// help my bird Oscar

Is there some in person or only Walmart online? It says it will deliver in a month😭
I haven’t checked in person, so I’m not sure.

Glad to see so many responses. My CAG had a firm non-flexible plastic collar. It had a faux cloth cover. If your bird got it off then he's more determined and/or athletic then mine was. Getting your bird to eat new foods especially 'healthy' types isn't that unusual. Read the multiple trials and failures here. There's several recipes here. My CAG acted like she was allergic veggies. It was an ongoing two decade battle. Here with trial and error I found a combination of veggie chop that she eats. She anticipates it now. A big turn around. Her veggies are preferred diced about the size of a cooked lima bean. I mix a variety of textures and colors. She loves brown rice and quinoa. So a small amount of either is added and mixed well. It not uncommon that companion birds will eat what they see their human eating. So I make chop that I will eat too. Mine is mixed in soup, casseroles and the like. You know your bird his personality, likes, dislikes. Make your change slow. Be consistent. A little tricky is fine. My CAG loves sweet potatoes and hates carrots. I tricked her by mixing the two together in her chop. She still dislikes carrots. But she eats them reluctantly.

I'm seeing some pretty good reviews of the Activon brand across the board, @emma_oscar, so if it's easier for you to get I think it's worth a try!
I ordered it online, I’m just going to chat with the vet first to make sure it’s safe for his wound. Do you think we should apply it was a sterile gauze? Or cover it with a bandage? The wound is in a junction he’s always moving the skin and would be so hard to bandage… I work in an ambulance so I have access to sterile equipment

You may want to see if you can find one of those knitted body stocking kind of things for him. May last longer then a collar and be less interesting to him.

Hi everyone,

I just signed up for this page because i desperately need help with my lovebird, Oscar. He is a 8y/o male. Oscar is very special to me and my mom, but he has had an ongoing feather picking issue, which has significantly worsened over the past few weeks.

What started as harmless bald spots, has become self mutilation of the underside of his left wing. He has drawn blood multiple times and the injury seems to never heal. I have taken him to the emergency, and to his primary vet 4 times. He has taken antibiotics, pain medication and antidepressants. The vet told me to put a recovery collar until the injury heals. Oscar has now been wearing the collar for 4+ weeks, and every time he manages to remove it or stretch it, he immediately goes to reopen the wound. I have tried everything to make him stop self mutilating - from new toys, foraging, removing any hormonal triggers, and nothing has worked.

Oscar is now very at risk of infection and bleeding… Has anyone managed to find solutions to this issue that isn’t leaving my poor bird in a collar for the rest of his life?? I am extremely desperate. Please help me save Oscar.

(TW I have attached photos of his injury)
I would just like to thank everyone for their replies.. it means so much to know a community of people care about birds just as much as I do. Lots of people dismiss them because they are not dogs or cats but I feel happy to know there are lovely people like you guys who are willing to help me with Oscar.

Thank you for your kind words, @emma_oscar. I'm so sorry the folks around you don't get how much you love Oscar - his is a life that's every bit as important as any other life and I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't understand how much love they give back. You and Oscar are both most welcome here any time and I hope you will keep us updated šŸ’–
