How can I teach my CAG to let me hold his wings for trimming and maybe tickle his under wing? He still feels insecure when I stroke his back although he LOVES me. He knows how to wave, lets me scratch his head and loves to play touch with my finger. He won't get on my shoulders for some reason and he won't let me touch his wings. My CAG is 2 1/2 years old aprox. and has been with me for a year and a half. I have the clicker but don't know where to start for the mentioned training. :grey:

Barbara Heidenreich has a DVD on training parrots to be ready for the veterinary exam. I haven't seen the DVD myself, but it sounds like something that may be up your ally, considering all that is involved in an exam.

It is really not a good idea to tickle under his wings, or stroke his back. Only mates touch each other there, and you do not want to stimulate mating behavior. You should be able to touch him all over briefly, but seldom, to get him used to being touched for medical exams, etc. But, regularly touching will lead to problems. Stay with head & neck scratches.

So by nature they don't like being touched? What is I want him to sit on my shoulders comfortably? will they ever do that? I get jealous from my friends who have their toos and macaws sit on their shoulders. murrr :(

awwwwww... the 1st video is SOOOOOOO CUTE! I hope my CAG would do that, he hates the vet and always screams. Although they don't over handle him he thinks they will kill him ;p

Different parrots enjoy different activities. Cockatoos you can completely and totally love up on them anywhere on their body! It's not necessarily good to do (re: hormones) but in the wild they are very affectionate birds. A grass parakeet on the other hand you'd be lucky if you could give one scritches! They are not big on allopreening, so typically don't enjoy the kind of physical interaction that cockatoos, conures or other birds may enjoy.

Also, even within the same species, some birds enjoy more physical interaction than others. It varies.

But the main thing is, is if you touch them in the wrong way, this can lead to an overly sexed parrot who gets the wrong signals from you... i.e. touching under the wings - something that only another mate would do. I know many people love it when their parrots "love" them in a mate kind of situation, but it's not a healthy relationship. We can't sexually please a parrot, nor can we raise a family with them. Essentially, we need to figure out what kind of touching and petting is acceptable for our birds and what's going too far.
