Water bottles and danger for birds beaks?

Our local rescue does not allow water bottles. They say the metal rips the birds drink from damages their beaks and tongues . Has anyone heard of this, or had experience of this with their birds? They say the Lixit and Bird Butler are not allowed.

I don't like water bottles at all. They are hard to clean properly and the metal quality concerns me as well. The beak thing makes sense though.
