Hi, I'm new here. This is Waylon, our 11-year-old cockatiel. We got him when our kids were in elementary school. Two are grown now and the youngest is in high school, so the house has gotten quiet — and Waylon is a social bird who needs a lot more stimulation and company than we can give him anymore. I also have a lot of travel coming up and don't want him home alone worrying about care. He should have about 14 good years ahead of him — cockatiels live to around 25, barring illness or injury.
Waylon is a character. He says "I'm a pretty bird!", does a wolf whistle, a cardinal call and a blue jay call, whistles the first few bars of the Hawaii 5-0 theme, and imitates family laughs and coughs and squeaky door creaks.
Honest word about handling: Waylon chooses his people. He'll step up happily for people he likes — he adores my grandson — and he'll bite people he doesn't. He's no fan of mine, so he's both easy and hard to tame depending on the person, and younger people tend to do best with him. Please expect that he may not step up for you at first.
He has lived in a busy house with me, my wife and our grandsons (three at first, two still at home), plus two family dogs and lots of visiting grand-dogs, which have never bothered him.
Diet: he eats Higgins mixed seed exclusively, and especially loves sunflower seeds.
Health: he has never been to a vet and has shown no signs of illness. If you'd like a vet check, that's up to you to arrange.
His cage is included: 26" wide x 19" deep x 39" high for the cage itself, 64" total height including the wheeled stand, with his perches, bowls and toys. One thing that is non-negotiable: his cage MUST sit in a corner. Out in the open he gets very nervous, won't eat, and pulls out his feathers. If you don't have a corner spot for him, he's not the right bird for you.
Rehoming fee is $200 total for Waylon, his cage, and whatever bulk food we have on hand. Pickup in Wayland, MA 01778 — bird, cage and food go together. Please be sure before you commit: this is a permanent rehome, and I won't be able to take him back, so if it didn't work out you'd be responsible for finding his next home.
If you're interested, please reply here in this thread and tell me a bit about your home: who's home during the day and who would spend time with him, any bird experience, other pets or kids, and where his cage would go. I'm new to the forum, so please reply in the thread — private messages unlock for me after I've made 10 posts, and until then a moderator can relay messages. I will ask for a photo of the corner where his cage would sit before agreeing to anything. Thanks for reading — I just want him in a busy, loving home where he gets the att
