Here's the deal. A lady has a 3 year old male Eclectus, which had bonded with her husband, who passed away 4 months ago. So the lady had to start back to work and for financial reasons had to sell the house and has a month to move into an apartment. So my wife asked if I would consider taking in her Eclectus.
It seems that the Eclectus used to stay out of his cage all day since her husband worked from home. But since he passed away, she has had to lock him in his cage for 8-10 hours a day. He has since started plucking feathers from the inside of his thighs and chewing his tail feathers and some of his and some of his wing feathers.
I'm a soft heart for a sad story so eventhough my wife wasn't really wanting another bird until after I finished my medical treatments, we agreed to a meet and greet yesterday afternoon. When the owner showed up with her Eclectus "Mac" she opened up the cage and he came right out to me and on my shoulder he went.
Mac started rubbing his face up against my cheek cooing like we were long lost pals. The owner said that I was about the same height and size as her husband and I was wearing a white T-****, which he always did as well. I introduced him to Tiki our Senegal and they seemed to get along fine, but I wanted to limit their contact since it is a new bird.
We spend like 2 hours together chatting and the whole time Mac was either on me or near me watching every move I made. At one point, he climbed over my chest to my face and pressed his beak up to my lips making those cute little kissing sounds. When it came time to go, he didn't seem to want to leave. I joked with the owner, by saying "Ok, how much did you pay him to do that". She said she was shocked because he usually wasn't that friendly to strangers and would take a little bit to warm up to.
But either way, I really liked Mac, I've never been around Eclectus's and the only one I had ever seen was at the Flea market and it was a female and would act like she wanted to rip your arm off and beat you with it if you got to close.
So I told her that I would take him in if she truely wanted to let him go. She said she had come to the conclusion when she saw him with me that it was a match made in heaven. But I told her to take the week and make sure. So she emailed me this morning and said yes, she wants me to adopt him. So I said OK, I will go and pick him and his cage & belongs up Sunday. She is going to have him groomed Saturday because his nails were a bit long.
Sorry for the long post. That's my story and I'm stickin to it ahahahahaha.
Sad thing is, I was hoping for my next bird to be an Amazon and I had one within sight. But it seems just when you think you have things figured out, life throws you a curve ball every time.
Oh, I almost forgot, here is Mac, these were taking during our meet and greet
