About to be a new owner of a baby Eclectus!

i hope all turns out well with you little guy but do keep us posted please.

I definitely will, I sent him a message yesterday but still nothing.. So waiting for a response from him.... Thank you!

Also for drinking water should I be using distilled water? Or is tapwater OK?

I have a RO/DI unit that is capable of making 100 gallons per day.. It strips the water COMPLETELY of EVERYTHING! My tapwater coming out the faucet reads around 400 TDS and after it goes threw my system it comes out at 0 TDS... (TDS - Total Dissolved Solids)

Here is my setup

So basically my question is would it be better giving the parrot my distilled water or should he be drinking tapwater? Is RO/DI / Distilled water too pure? If that even makes any sense.. lol

I've been thinking about the possible reasons for his pale beak and am wondering what hand feeding formula the feeder is using. Possibly, if this is the first Eclectus he's hand fed, he used a formula that wasn't optimum for Eclectus chicks. Just an idea. If he's been feeding macaws and uses the same formula he uses for them it likely isn't that however. Still worth asking, IMO. There are a few forumulas that don't work well for Eclectus.

By all means use R.O. water since you have it.

Yea, I know I wrote breeder but I don't think he is an actual Eclectus breeder.. But i'm really not 100% sure if breeds them or if he just is the one that gets them as baby's and weans them then sells them... But I definitely do want to get down to the pale beak, i'm waiting on his response.. I'm pretty anxious to hear what he has to say...

Thank you, you are all so helpful..

As far as I know Joe is a broker, not a breeder. He gets his babies from someone else and raises them. :)

I don't know if this is true or not, but I "think" I read somewhere that you can use RO water, but don't run it through the DI unit.

Do you have a reeftank? :D Just asking because I had one of those things during my reef days.

Water
(That doesn't mention the DI part, unfortunately :( )

Hmm OK Yea I guess I can always disconnect the DI and just run it threw the RO filters.. Thank you..

And yes I had a reef tank up until a few weeks ago as the tank was splitting a seam on a 200g so I broke everything down and sold.. . Here is of the setup I had:

WOW!!! Awesome setup you had! GORGEOUS corals!!! :D

This one was mine. I sold it as a whole and bought my first Macaw (Niko). :)

You have a very nice setup yourself! Impressive! Yours looks like it was pretty mature? How long was yours running for?
I only had this particular tank running for a few months before I noticed the split happening.. Was very sad to break it down but that was my last straw in the saltwater hobby lol..

I started out with a 75RR, bought a bunch of SPS and LPS frags and they grew...and grew...and grew... I then upgraded to a 180RR. I had it running for only 18 months or so. I didn't even use MHs but T5s, but our electric bill was STILL almost double. Maintenance was quite atrocious, as I did everything manually, so I called it quits. I do like looking through my old pictures though. :)

Yup very costly! I was running LED's on mine. But I have used T5's and MH on my previous tanks...

Also, he has a female Eclectus already weaned and ready to go.. I am going to go sometime this week and interact more with both again to see which one I like, I may just exchange the male for the female..

Here is a picture of his Female Eclectus that is available..

ok she has the same problem with the pale beak, do you know of any other breeders, go into my albums and have a look at what they should look like, i really feel you should find another breeder or broker, but there is some thing not right with those two.

Thanks everyone, I put a deposit on the parrot so I am just going to ride it out for now and bring it to the vet for blood work.. He has a 72 hour refund/exchange health policy so if it is determined to have any health issues from the vet I will be refunded..

How exciting for you!!! I can't wait to hear more from you as you get ready for your little guy to come home...

Thank you, once I bring him/her (still undecided) home I will be taking many picture's to share with all of you! I am very excited!

Baby's home! She is 14weeks old, naming her Athena I think.... Fed her some fresh apple and some peppers from the volkmans mix and she gobbled it right up.. She seems to be settling in great! I have her out on her aluminum travel cage hanging out with me for the rest of the night until sleep time..

Also, when preparing fruits and veggies do you use soap to clean or just use water by itself??

WOHOO!!! Many many congrats on bringing Athena home!!! :D

What a GORGEOUS girl!!

I just rinse my fresh fruits and veggies with water, and I peel apples and pears (unless I purchased organic) on the other fruits I keep the peel, just making sure I cleaned them well beforehand. :)

How are you getting her to the vet within the 72 hour time frame if you picked her up on a Friday? I think this is super important.

Bathe her, bathe her, bathe her! Also, give her as much food as she will eat. Continuously. You cannot over feed a youngster. Offer every kind of fruit and vegetable and leafy green you can get your hands on.

I would also buy ONE bag of Harrison's High Potency coarse pellets and give her 10 a day until the bag is gone. You may need to order them online if your vet doesn't sell them. I do NOT think Eclectus need pellets but she has had a less than stellar start and until you get her diet worked out she can use the help.

Congratulations!

Thank you for the advice, I will order some of the harrisons asap.. So far she has eaten half an egg boiled with the shell fresh from my chickens, broccoli, carrot, sweet corn, green beans, grapes, peppers, peanuts some seeds from the volkmans eclectus mix... I am non-stop feeding her, let me know if this is all OK.. I need to go to whole-foods and get some more fresh fruits and veggies..

Eggs are iffy, IMO. There are better sources of calcium. I know that some people do not agree with me. But, she is a Solomon I think and they are particularly susceptable to fatty liver disease. A tiny bit of egg once a month is probably okay. Greens contain calcium as do almonds. Just do a google search for vegetarian sources of calcium to get a nice list.
