SOON TO JOIN MY FAMILY: Coda/Koda the Green Cheek Conure
Hey everyone! So, im new to this site and this is my first thread but i actually have a question and i would love if you could help me out. :D
so, im adopting a 4 year old Green Cheek Conure from his owners as they have become really busy and i was wondering, because it is 4 years old, is it going to take longer to like and bond with me than a different age(obviously a baby would bond faster) or would it like me since it is already tame from its previous owners? Would it hate me because i am its new owner and its not with its old ones?

Thanks in advance!:green2:

Good for you, adopting an older bird! That takes a lot of commitment.

I just adopted an older GCC myself, so I have an idea of exactly what you're going to be going through. As to what you can expect, the ball is up in the air on that one. I expect that a lot of it depends on how well the bird was socialized by it's previous owners. This doesn't mean how tame the bird is or how nice it is/was with them, but how well the bird was socialized with *everyone*.

Quite a bit also depends on how well you and the bird "click." ... If the bird trusts you, if you trust the bird, if your personalities are compatible... All of those things go into determining if and how fast a bond will happen between a bird and it's person.

Obviously, since the bird is supposed to be tame, it will make it easier to interact with him, thereby allowing you to feel closer to the bird than you would if you were starting at ground zero. I expect the same is true for the bird. :) I'm also confident that unless you do something to really hurt the little fellow on a repeated basis, there's not much of his hating you. They seem to be programmed to love and desire companionship. Only if they perceive that something bad is happening will they get scared and fight or fly.

I think if you take things very slow for a while and let your bird get to know the best most gentle, calm and quiet side of you, you'll have a wonderful new companion for at least the next decade of your life... With great care, probably much longer! Congratulations!
