Cheddar update 1 month

I don’t really know where to start but it’s mostly not so good news.

The Twins routine has been destroyed by the new arrival.
One of my …..family members is very upset. Not for buying him but for the extra noise his presence is causing.

Merlin and Cheddar get along fairly well but only for a limited time.
After 2/3 hours Merlin is wanting to escape and go back to Luna.
I’m not sure what goes wrong. Best way I can put it is Cheddar acts like an annoying little brother towards Merlin and he gets tired of it.

Luna/Cheddar ….. I don’t think they would get along and I don’t want to try. Just a feeling but…..

And the biggest problem is if Merlin is close to Cheddar Merlin will drive off and chase after Luna to keep her away from Cheddar.
Yet Merlin still wants to be friends with Luna when Cheddar is in his own cage (well kind of) it’s very complicated.

And Cheddar, he clearly wants to be with Merlin.

So
Merlin wants to be friends with Cheddar but he wants to keep Luna on standby??
Cheddar wants to be part of the group.
Luna has to be kept separate if Merlin and Cheddar are together or even close to each other.

I keep telling myself it takes time and things will settle out.

That's all a bummer. I guess it's always a risk when you add a bird to a mix especially one of same or a similar species. I'm sure you're very disappointed.

Roll with it the best I can.

Merlin and Luna still remain friends and sleep/roost next to each other despite arguments during the day.

Cheddar is not exactly real friendly with me but he’s not a bitter and I have a chance of winning him over.
I just feel I’m under a time constraint.
When his wings grow back controlling him will be much more difficult.
Will my…. Annoyed family member say enough is enough before things settle down?

All of my family living with me suffer from migraine headaches.
Having 2/3 amazons screaming while you have a headache is kind of hard to take.

I'll bet it is! Have they tried earplugs? I have some that muffle most sounds enough for them to be tolerable (snoring etc). My husband can just take his hearing aids out if he wants peace and quiet.

I would keep Cheddar's wings trimmed enough to prevent high flying. I've had one budgie for six months that can't seem to figure out that when it's time to go to bed all she has to do is get on the stick and let me put her in like all the others do or just go in the cage herself. I'm not trying to hurt her. She must be able to see that, but I have to chase her around until she's worn out and put her in there. I have to slightly trim her wings or it will take an hour to get her in.

I’m sick.
Don’t know if it’s a cold or the flu but the whole family is sick.

Merlin and Cheddar have spent the last two days in the double cage together, Luna was happy to be in Bingo’s old cage.
During the day.
At night Luna and Merlin want to spend the night roosting together so I have to reshuffle them.

During the day Merlin will chase Luna away with varying degrees of aggression.
Very strange arrangement but this generally keeps them from screaming all the time.

Sometimes. Sometimes I feel like a lion tamer in the circus dealing with the three amazon’s..
Plus Bella is being a real pill lately.
Must be hormonal, trying to get into the cabinets and hunting for nesting sites.

I hope my budgie Joey stops trying to squeeze herself into dark places now that she has the Suprelorin implant. I also hope she stops scratching and digging in her food dish and tossing everything out. I have 10 male budgies and none of them do this.

So yah they are together night and day.
Luna has to stay separate and have separate out of cage time.

I think Luna may warm to me now that Merlin is giving her the cold shoulder. Yesterday she flew to me and landed on the back of the couch. Something that hasn’t happened in long time.

Merlin and Cheddar are maybe more suited to each other cuz both are more playful than Luna is.

Top picture is first time I’ve seen both birds on the swinging perch. Luna never used it, she could but would get off immediately.

Screaming is down by alot but maybe not pre Cheddar level. Cheddar has his own scream and he screams ……at random times throughout the day as opposed to just morning/evening.

As far as Luna. The whole thing is complicated.
In the evening like after sundown I can tell all three want to be together but I fear Merlin’s jealousy might come out suddenly.
Luna when let out of her cage does not try to reach Merlin. She is content to fly around or sit on her cage close to me.

When Merlin/Cheddar is out of cage Merlin try’s to “get to” Luna and lunges and try’s to attack Luna.. Luna stays away from the side of the cage so she is safe enough. Luna is likely unhappy about this but …..how to put this I don’t think Merlin ever saw Luna as a mate or partner just a “friend “ whereas Merlin seems more serious about Cheddar.

I am hoping after the novelty wears off maybe all three can get along. If not I am trying to give Luna extra attention so maybe she will decide I’m not such a bad guy after all.

It’s very possible she may seek companionship from you now that she’s not receiving attention from Merlin. Hopefully, it all works out in a positive way. I’m glad that the screaming has reduced.

Yesterday Cheddar made his first real flight.
He came with clipped wings and he tried once before early on but made little progress.
This time he flew all the way across the living room.
He didn’t gain altitude but he covered quite a distance.
I’m sure he wants to fly with Merlin and it looks like it won’t be too much longer.

I think Merlin is getting a little…..Tried of Cheddar.
Hard to put into words. I see Merlin holding his foot out as if to tell Cheddar to keep his distance.
Like I’m tired of preening you, give it a rest.
I think Merlin is getting a little of his own back because this was how Luna treated Merlin in the beginning.
It was always Merlin was the playful. Bird.
