COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

So I just got exposed to shingles,!.

You have never had chickenpox? If you did, you are safe!
It's uncleare, I didn't ever have Chicken pox, and people with shingles blisters do spread the virus that causes chicken pox. But 33 years ago I tried to get the vaccine, they said I had chickens pox in the past and didn't vaccinate me. My doctor a few years ago wanted to vaccinate me, but Because of my medical condition I can't get vaccine. My mom had chicken pox as a kid, as adult they have her two vaccine to prevent shingles.. so I'm confused.., ( but hoping I don't have to worry)!

Here's from the CDC:

"Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past can develop shingles; even children can get shingles. Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. The virus that causes shingles, varicella zoster virus (VZV) can spread from a person with active shingles and cause chickenpox in someone who had never had chickenpox or received chickenpox vaccine. VZV spreads through direct contact with fluid from the rash blisters."

Re: Wuhan virus

Hey. *hug* Nobody is trying to invalidate your experiences or your medical issues, and I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Inger and I live in the same city in Washington State. it borders Mill Creek, which is where a school has been shut down for cleaning because a student tested positive. Personally, I live right on that border, and I even know someone whose husband works at that school. Despite that, things are normal in our area. Neither of us has seen unusually long lines. The only hoarding I've heard of so far is toilet paper. :18: So the talk of tons of crazy long lines in Washington and the implied panic that would cause them? That made me go, "What?" and chuckle because that's not my experience at all.

Having been to Walmart today, we need to reassess our position! They are sold out of bleach and rubbing alcohol. I didn't check the hand sanitizer, but given the fact that Amazon is sold out of it . . .

Re: Wuhan virus

“I’m here to tell you, right now, at one of the busiest hospitals in the country, I don’t have [a rapid diagnostic test] at my finger tips.” “I still have to make my case, plead to test people. This is not good. We know that there are 88 cases in the United States. There are going to be hundreds by middle of week. There’s going to be thousands by next week. And this is a testing issue.”

This is still a big problem, they are not testing just anyone's who have symptoms. You still have to have history, or be in hospital cuz you so sick, and first test neg for flu. Still many places without tests.....sigh

( I never had chicken pox. But a blood test in college said I did, stuff back then mistakes made. I did have hepatitis vaccine, then a doctor accidentally stuck me with a needle full if blood from a monkey with hepatitis, so I had to have a lot of tests, the test said I had never been vaccinate had no titer, was a bad vaccine batch. What a nightmare that was.... Didn't get tho :) )

Re: Wuhan virus

Does anyone know, those 20% that require serious care.
Do there lungs recover from this or is there permanent damage ?

I have not read/heard anything about the aftereffects of those seriously affected.
Yes , if you get to the third stage ( not all do) you have holes in your lungs.
Not all people get to stage three! But if you do see below)
During the third phase, lung damage continues to build—which can result in respiratory failure. Even if death doesn’t occur, some patients survive with permanent lung damage. According to the WHO, SARS punched holes in the lungs, giving them “a honeycomb-like appearance”—and these lesions are present in those afflicted by
Coronavirus.

Dr. Fauci: Coronavirus now at 'outbreak' and 'likely pandemic proportions'
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leading expert on coronavirus, says the disease is now at "outbreak," and even "likely pandemic proportions."

Re: Wuhan virus

A shake down on the numbers from Italy ( because they are doing a good job of sharing)

Over 23,000 tested
1860 (ish) active cases
908 are in the hospital
60(ish) critical
52 died
142 have recovered.

Sobering numbers underlining the seriousness of this disease. I'm sure the numbers are still weighted with serious cases , things can play out differently , but they have tested over 23, 000 so they should be picking up mild cases with their serious cases

Stay safe Washington,,! Inger be careful!

My Father had chickenpox and later in life suffered extensively with shingles. When I was a child, I recall my parents and our extended families would gathered at the home of an unfortunate family member (child) that had chickenpox so that the entire gathering of kids would be infected... When I turned the young age of 65 I could get the shingles vaccine. At that time, they where not aware that it didn't cover all the variations of shingles. So last year, series 2 became available. Plus this year (2019 - 2020), the Flu was a two shot series.

Regarding the current monster we are faced with, it will be around for a very long time as it reappears every season, decade after decade, century after century. And, over that very long time, its variations will appear. Viruses never go away. So, as this monster flows around the World, we need to prepare, to follow those very common means of prevention and 'pray' that our scientists and Bio techs find a functional vaccine that will first curve the impact (but not halt it). Next with efforts place on this virus, they will target its first 'known' variant (Italy). Here again, it will not be a silver bullet.

Stay safe my good friends! This monster is here for the long run and we need to understand that and practice the only real protection we Humans have, cleanliness and caution...

Re: Wuhan virus

Ok I have a question.
Who pays for coronavirus patient's? Other countries have picked up the tab
How likely is that in America?
What about sick leave?
How can average American pay for an extended 3 week in ICU?????? HOW?!
How about funerals? Are we going to be mandatory cremated???

I do not know...

However, since the Government is leading this parade it is highly likely that there is a Standard Operation Manual (SOP) that covers those subjects, likely based around like natural /region wide catastrophes. Understand that it first Starts with State Government, who then petition the US Government with Decoration of Emergency... Point being, in the US this starts at the State Level.

Nicely said regarding 'other countries,' but everyone of them do not have the resources to continue it very far into the future, maybe a few more weeks, at best...

At some point in the future, it is likely that the Nation States of the World will place claims against China... But that is likely a couple of years in the future.

Re: Wuhan virus

I know right now people are scared and worried about this virus, so am I, it's nothing to take lightly. There's some good advice here about practicing cleanliness, etc. I wish everyone out there would cover their face when coughing/sneezing, but they won't. I saw a woman at Walmart I'd like to have knocked her block off her shoulders because she was outright coughing and coughing with no face covering.

I believe one of the strongest defenses against this thing is a strong immunity to it, and that's by eating healthy. You can Google and find articles about foods to build immunity to the Coronavirus. Just wearing a mask is not the answer, though it helps. Worry and junk foods will pull you down and make you prone to it more. You have to fight fire with fire, so eat healthy and build immunity. I know what it's like to be worried and scared. But I've also seen nutrition do its work.

Long ago there was a story about a doctor with terminal cancer. He said two hippie hitch hikers he picked up told him cancer was not that hard to beat, so he got on a regimen of nutrition, cut out sugar and 6 months later he was free of cancer. Nutrition can beat Coronavirus.

Fully agree with work to grow /maintain a healthy immune system. BUT, just what does one target against fundamentally as 'only very recently defined Virus has been found.' We are only a very few weeks into a definition of this monster. A very unique Monster at that... So, just what is the exact ingredients to target against this thing. The base virus plus mad cow? Remember this thing has a protein as part of its design...

I'm not at all down playing the need... But, a mix that is targeting the original base Virus will not measure up against this monster. And, by the way it has likely already pushed a variant (Italy) that is just now being defined.

Be careful what you are spending your money on! I'm all for a general strengthening. But a special formulation, a bit early to market...

I have kept an eye out for masks ever since China first went quarantine. I usually have a box or two at home to use when cleaning (for dust allergies). Can't be go for love or money. Or, they can be got for money. The price shot sky-high on Amazon... has come back down now to $30/box. !!!! NO masks in any drugstores, only little signs saying "due to high demand we might be out of stock..."

The large company I work for was recently acquired by an even larger company, who Took Away 2 of our already quite minimal Time-Off accruable days. (In return, they assigned 2 new holidays... which our acquired company then petitioned, and was granted, to require us to work those days anyway...)

Today our even-larger company sent out a large internal communication about Coronavirus which, amonst other things, told us to not come to work if we have any symptoms of anything. As far as how that is supposed to work, was a brief half-sentence telling us to reference the company's time-off policy!!

Today in a store I was excessively consvious of a store clerk who scratched her nose thrice whilst helping me. The Side of her nose only, mind you. As an allergy sufferer & asthmatic, I'm somewhat alarmed by the need to ostracize basically anyone with any symptoms. Well I'm Not saying don't attempt to stop the spread! But sending "Communications" to your employees to stay home if having basically any symptoms of anything, while not allowing any PTO to do so, is just another game of blame-the-victim in our country with currently the world's most inefficient, profit-hungry healthcare system.

No, not a special formulation, just trying to impart the importance of healthy eating, and that excessive worry can lower an immune system. And I'm not saying there's no need to worry, but not to the point you get sick. There are articles on building the immune system against this thing. Nothing specifically, just strength building.

Re: Wuhan virus

Remember that masks are designated as retention devises that are used for keeping our 'wet' sneezes from spreading to others. They have limited ability to halt any airborne virus (which this is not), they will halt that other person's 'wet' sneezes right up to the point of your hands touching its surface and then carrying it to you.

When you are looking for bi-directional masks they start at N-100 and going sky-high to full rebreather systems.

We are going to have to find a new way to interact /navigating and what we do when in places with a higher volume of people. With unbelievable luck, I'm retired and can chose when I shop (early morning and using only self-check-out... In the near future, I'm considering using disposable gloves far more often...

Stay safe out their folks...

Yup, I got what you are saying. Sorry missed that point earlier!!!

There are actual 'stuff' /'methods' found available on the internet that claims prevention and/or full recover from... That's scary.

That's just scammers playing on fear for profit.

Re: Wuhan virus

As someone who fly's 35 to 47 weeks a year both domestically and all over the world for the last 20 years (until the last couple when I semi retired) I used to get sick all thge time, especially overseas but then I discovered Airborne and now I come down with something only once every couple of years. Then probably 10 years ago I was diagnosed with ARMD and started taking a suppliment called Juice Plus for my eyes. That worked and still works great and as a side benefit I was able to give up the Airborne because that fruit and vegetable suppliment did the same for my immune system as the Airborne did. That plus ignoring the 5 second rule and not washing my hands has made me pretty resistant to catching anything ;)

But seriously, Airborne worked and Juice Plus actually reversed some of the affects of the ARMD and has kept it in check for over 10 years with the added benefit of the immune booster.
