COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

Clark conure , I posted much info on this earlier in the thread. Short answer is yes, birds are susceptibility to all influenza's A viruses.

Also I would suggest all people in areas of active infections of new coronavirus, get a humidifier. A humidifier helps with breathing, and there are some over the counter decongestants. Also read up on coupage, I only seem to find info on coupage for dogs, my understanding ( I am not a doctor!) Is that it can be done on people to. When I had pneumoia as a child my mom did coupage on me. " Nebulization and coupage are used in patients with a variety of lung conditions. ... Coupage is often recommended for patients with pneumonia or bronchitis. Secretions produced as a result of these conditions can interfere with the ability of oxygen to reach the lower airway and enter the bloodstream."

Also people with lung issues should be proped up to make breathing easier, and turned slightly to the left, then right, then back, every half hour or so if not able to turn themselves. When I have breathing problems from MG I like a fan blowing lightly at my face, makes me feel I can breath easier. I also find I can breath easier if the temp is a little cooler, tho you don't want to chill someone's with a fever.

Bone broth and chicken soups are good. Eat foods high in vitamin A and Vitamin C, consider adding a vitamin D supplement as directed on the vitamin bottle. Apple juice is even better than gateraid for electrolytes. Straight water can be harder to drink when you are coughing. Sugar and honey help with coughing.

Consider having chamomile tea, and other teas on hand. Garlic is thought to be an immune booster.

A light message can go boost circulation, and help improve oxygenation of tissues.

My mom used to serve instance jello hot as a tea, so good, so comforting!

Don't forget the power of the mind. If you do get sick, believe and visualize yourself getting better, and surviving.

Share your flu hacks!!

Fresh air and movement are like medicine too. Don't overdo the excersize, but going for a short walk as you are able helps to get the blood moving, and is a great morale booster(avoid touching things or coughing on people tho)! Fresh fruit and veggies are amazing for you. Stay hydrated and try to avoid processed foods or excessive refined sugar intake. Mental health is very important! Don't overlook the power of chicky schnoodle soup or whatever your go-to comfort food is in times of illness. Hot simple broth is a great thing to sip like tea when you are unwell.

Uhhhhhggggg, I just cracked a really nasty rotten egg into a hot skillet and filled the whole house with rotten egg stink. EEW! Ok, lesson learned. Crack eggs into a dish BEFORE putting into a hot pan. That was WAY worse than just a rotten egg. The heat really amplified and spread the stink.

Re: Wuhan virus

Why is the vast number of America Hospitals not using the full spectrum Flu test: Sad Answer; The vast number of Insurance Companies (including government paid) are not approving (paying for) it!!! They are only paying 'IF' the individual has been exposed to a known carrier or if the individual has travel to known areas... This may also be effected by the availability of the test.

If you have not gotten the 2019 - 2020 Flu Shot, please get it ASAP. If nothing else, it will limit the intensity of the Flu and provide some (minor) resistance to this new variant.

Was in today for a L5-L4 Lumbar injection and was amazed at the changes since my last one in November. Far more prescreening of current health, travel and likely exposure. Temperature check prior to any pre-testing. But, as noted by others; our current Flu Season is active and is likely more of a driver.

12th US case just confirmed in Wisconsin. Person had traveled to Beijing and was exposed there. No information on age, sex, specific location has been released.

Re: Wuhan virus

China seems to be releasing an increase of cases by 3,000 or so every day. With such strict quarantine on so many cities, I keep waiting for this number to drop..
So many sufferings in this country. I can't even imagine whole cities shut down, for close to two weeks? And the Cascade on goods and services, and production. The world has never seen anything like this.

Let us consider the plages of Europe past... We are likely faced with a serious potential here, but there are true dangers in getting the Masses stirred ahead of this... Yes, they should be in preventive mode just for the Flu strains that are floating around and let us not forget the common Cold... But, they don't think further than a day or two (maybe better stated 'week') behind them.

Re: Wuhan virus

I'll tell you what scares me with this epidemic. Everything is made in China. I defy anyone to go into a retail store ( and I estimate 90% on line ) and find anything that was not Made in China. WHat is going to happen when goods made there by infected workers hits the supply chain around the world? Stuff like packaging, or products we have to handle, like tooth brushes, plastic bottles for just about everything and so forth.

Anyone have data on the sustainablity of this virus outside a host? Some viruses can shut down and go dormant until conditions are ripe.

With clarity, NO!
But, to my understanding China medical volume based products are near fully automated, minimal Human interaction /contact. As you know, the leading facilities are fully automated, if there is a concern it's the black market facilities that is a concern regarding all facets of the process. You're a better source regarding that activity than I.
To my following, this variate has a limited active period outside the body in the open /dry environment. But, the information continues to be influx. As you know, in process inventory (shipping /warehousing) lead-time is commonly several months.

Re: Wuhan virus

I on't think the virus lives that long outside of the host.

But as many factories and business are closed, there is already a supply problem of automotive parts, and casscade effecting other countries that rely on on goods. This has to be having a huge economics impact.

Sadly I saw a piece showing New York is shunning Chinese restaurants....

The risk to America's is so low right now. But with Seasonal influenza in full swing, it makes it easy to imagine what could happen. All of the people o current know that have whatever is going around here were vaccinated. I know of two who developed pneumoia from it, they were not tested for influenza it was just assume....both are over 65, and one had already been vaccinated against pneumoia. He is quite pissed , having had the double vaccine recommend for those above 65 and having had the pneumonia vaccine as well.. I don't blame him!!

There is so much "Smoke" about this being much worse than reported in Whuhan. That many deaths aren't counted, reports of not enough tests to keep up ( as would happen anywhere), personal stories of censorship, and local doctor and nurses trying to get the word out about what's really happened. That I have to believe some of that is true. I can't imagine the suffering of the local population, what if you have a non flu illness or emergency, with hospitalas already overwhelmed.

Also any cases here would have much easier access to health care and supportive pneumatic care in hospital. We are very blessed.

If all of this attention would only help us stop the spread of seasonal influenza. Allow people to stay home when they are sick

Re: Wuhan virus

1 of the 8 whistleblower doctors is confirmed dead of the virus. He was 34/35 years old. Leaves behind a child and an also-infected pregnant wife. He was arrested and questioned by the local police after trying to spread the word about a new "SARS-like" illness. RIP, history should remember him as a hero.

Also, now 20 confirmed cases on "Diamond Princess" cruise ship off of Japan. After the first 10 were evaced to hospital, the 2nd 10 tested positive.

India is proudly declaring all 645 people they evacuated from Wuhan tested negative, but I hope they quarantine anyway as I believe they could still be infected and test positive later. They are talking about evacuating the pakistani students that have been left there and treating, then "deporting" them to Pakistan. I hope they do do so, but very carefully, as at last count 4 of them were confirmed infected and all had been in close proximity to make and send videos begging for help from anyone who they could get their message to. Pakistan government decided not to evac them.

I heard a report that the virus could live on doorknobs. But I think China-made products are not horribly dangerous, as they spend time in shipping(maybe long enough to render virus nonviable?).

Re: Wuhan virus

Also, only 2 African countries have the ability to test for the virus, but it is hoped they all will be able to by the 7th. I am really worried for the people of Africa.

This is so sad!!!!!! He is a hero!! I will rember him.

Singapore is having more cases, a few if them critical. One case had no travel, or known contact with anyone who traveled to China. Keep safe Charmedbyekkie!

Heavy used bathroom doors in which the user has wet to semi-wet hands can transfer! But the vast majority of door knobs are dry smooth surfaces and are less likely to transfer. Also, any newly made door knob (still in packaging) has a long transit, inventory, and peruse time that the likelihood of transferring a virus is near non-existent as one is commonly talking multiple months of separation.

Assuming Novel has similar characteristics as MERS, the virus remains viable on plastics or metals for up to 48 hours depending on temperature or humidity.

Re: Wuhan virus

I read conflicting story that Whistle blower is still alive on life support... prayers

National Geographic article. Only those with pneumonia being tested, those that die at home are not being counted, many are very ill and not able to get help. Heartbreaking. And I've read in Whuhan has a fatality higher at 14% of infected, this article sited 11-15% fatality locally, tho still 2% overall, ( some sources state 4%, but could be much lower if true numbers of infected are higher)
"Zhang and her colleagues show that 99 confirmed severe cases admitted to her hospital between January 1 and January 20 had a mortality rate of 11 percent. Nationwide, fatalities among severe cases are running around 15 percent.
The study identifies a list of factors that could help predict those worst cases, including a history of smoking, bacterial infection, high blood pressure, diabetes, and old age. “Early identification of those factors and early treatment are critical for preventing patients from developing fatal symptoms,” Zhang says.
Other experts doubt this bleak outlook will extend beyond the critical zone of the outbreak’s epicenter. The overall death tally is around 560, about 2 percent of the confirmed cases spread across the globe."

Re: Wuhan virus

It looked too bad for CCP that a 34 year old with no underlying conditions to have died of the virus. He is reported by the hospital as "attempting to be recusitated" for several hours. Aka dead.

Re: Wuhan virus

41 more confirmed sick on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan, bringing the total infected on the ship so far to 61. The patient zero disembarked on Jan 25 and was not symptomatic at the time. He was later diangnosed in Hong Kong.

Re: Wuhan virus

Yep, we've 28 cases currently, but at least 4 people got infected while in Singapore. They only showed symptoms upon returning to their home countries, so that count is under their respective countries where they are being treated, not Singapore.

Currently we're at yellow for DORSCON. To give context:

We shall see how it progresses.

Some of the public is quite fearful - I've been talking to taxi cab drivers, who feel that their daily income has decreased since this started. Most public organised gatherings have been suspended to preempt anything; however, friends and families are still gathering for hanging out and Chinese New Year parties (will be going to one this weekend).

The National Environmental Agency in Singapore released a list of cleaners that can be used to help. That being said, my vet posted on her Facebook page warning people to be wary about using them because many contain harmful chemicals for birds, thought they may be labelled 'pet-safe'. That being said, the NEA pointed out which chemicals in these cleaners are the ones that handle the virus, and F10 has a few of those chemicals. So F10 is a bird-safe disinfectant that isn't mainstream, hence it didn't make the list.

To address some of my colleagues' concerns, I have brought a few spray bottles of F10-SC to the office, and a couple colleagues are placing orders through me to get more for their own homes.

Re: Wuhan virus

Stay safe! Glad you have a good cleaner, and are sharing.

It seems it spreads pretty easy to infect so many on the cruise ship, and before symptoms.
