COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

has anyone else noticed the change in the north america map of the virus?

It no longer shows where the cases are located other than "the state totals"
california's map use to differentiate los angeles or long beach or san francisco.
Now there is just one big dot in the center of the state that gives the total.

Hmm. Is someone trying to avoid something? If we know what areas are focal centers for the virus maybe we would like to avoid those areas.

nailed it!!!

Re: Wuhan virus

I can buy into the below, based on how it spreads a different events and the numbers getting infected if a person who is positive is at a place.
( Source, unsure of expertise)
From a private CC with well-known expert: Much more contagious than generally believed. If you’re even 5 minutes seated next to someone with disease, highly likely to get it. Spread via aerosol. Can get it from across the room. People pre-symptomatic are highly infectious. Washing hands of limited value given aerosol spread.

Certainly things are getting real in the United States

Re: Wuhan virus

This whole thing reminds me too much of "The Stand"
On thing keeps ringing through my head (That Stephen King wrote).

Someone finally invented a chain letter that works.

Re: Wuhan virus

Well we have our first confirmed case in my county and several other pending tests. I know that there are lots of confirmed cases just south of us (I’m north of Seattle), so it’s not surprising. Our county has a relatively small population so hopefully people will stay home and keep their germs contained. I get to go to work unfortunately.

Re: Wuhan virus

Oh ok thank you yes it was so huge that I didn’t have the time to read it all. But I was worried about my four conures, thats why I came to this forum in search on answers. Thank you

Re: Wuhan virus

It's recommended to wash you hands , I guess hand sanitizer before you open the door at home.
Stay strong,,!

Re: Wuhan virus

The high school just down the street from me is closed for deep cleaning. It seems that a teacher was in close contact with someone who came down with COVID-19.

Because I'm in the high-risk category, I've had to stop volunteering at the cat rescue until the CDC changes its recommendations. I've been doing this for six years and am the most senior volunteer at our location. It's breaking my heart.

I'm recovering from a nasty cold that also caused a long bout of laryngitis, plus I have chronic sinus issues. (Don't worry, I went to the doctor a few weeks ago when I got the cold, and they confirmed that it's neither COVID-19 nor psittacosis. There's also no pneumonia.) I am so painfully aware of my voice and of every cough and sniffle! Everyone is now so on edge that whenever customers come in, I will strain my throat rather than sound like I have laryngitis, or choke rather than cough or sniff.

On the bright side (?), my commute is now 35 minutes each way instead of 60-90 minutes each way. All of the Microsofties and Amazonians are working from home, so no Geeks With Cars™ riding my bumper or causing traffic jams by weaving in and out of traffic and forcing everyone else to brake hard.

Re: Wuhan virus

Also, I hope this isn't out of line, but a gentle reminder to try to continue supporting your local small businesses! Many small businesses offer online ordering, and if you call, some places may be willing to ship given the current situation. It never hurts to ask.

(Yes, I admit that I'm worried about the shop I work at, as well as a couple of other independent pet stores.)

The commute has been unbelievable! Left work in Renton a little after 4, home to Everett by 4:50. Not only Amazon and MS, but Northshore school district people staying home with their kids and UW doing 100% distance learning. That’s the “upside” to this.

I have not seen (possible missed it) the change in status of this Virus to the status of 'fully airborne.' There is no question that an uncovered sneeze of volume can place heavier droplets over longer distances in the air. But that is not the definition of a Virus that is fully airborne. That uncovered sneeze effectiveness demises with distance as the heavy droplets fall out of the air.

Washing hands still has great value as the largest means of infection is when one places your heavily laden hands on your face and more specifically your month, nose and eyes. Please maintain washing your hands!

Michigan joined the States with likely cases (Two (2)). And, we are also starting to see the influx (migration) of returning SnowBirds..

Hoping that you continue to feel ever better, good friend.
Consider a non-sugar hard candy to help with your coughing.

Re: Wuhan virus

A local college announced they will be ending the semester on Friday and all students need to move out of dorms on Sat.

Poor Rin is still covered. We took the 2 outdoor kitties to be neutered yesterday, so they had to be indoors overnight to recover. They are in crates in the living room.. near enough to Rin to scare him. So he gets to sleep in a bit until we put the less-groggy-now kitties back outside.

Re: Wuhan virus

Coronavirus in my town if 40,000 people!!!!! One Walmart, 2 grocery stores, so we all go to the same places......., Very scary!!!!!
Plus they announced for the mild cases, slight fever, dry cough, fatigue, these are all the things I have,!! No fever anymore, but still dry cough, and taking naps ( which I never have since I was tiny baby, I didn't even nap then my mom said);..... I have stayed in since fever and cough. So if it is a mild case, I can say it is very mild , or it just a cold , who knows.....no I won't get tested. My mom's best freind just came back 4 days ago from a cruise, used the port in Florida that they told all cruise people to self isolate. She has a fever and cough, went to doc, told was on the cruise from the port that has infection, he said he not testing her unless she gets sick enough to need a hospital!!!! She is 78!!!!!

Re: Wuhan virus

Yeah, the testing in this country strikes me as nothing more than a show to keep people calm.

Knocking on wood for you that it is a cold or a very mild case and stays that way!

Please don't tell me you let your cats run loose!

Re: Wuhan virus

We live on a farm and have 2 well cared for barn cats who are excellent hunters and have solved our rodent problem. The cats are fed daily, loved, have shelters, are vaccinated, neutered, watched, protected. When the coyotes are close, we lock the cats in the barn. But this is a farm, and we had a rodent problem until we got them. We would have chicken eggs stolen, feed chewed into, a mouse dropped out of our ceiling, a rat chewed thru our wall.... but the cats have solved this. They are mighty rodent hunters.

Eta they are also rescues, and we rescued their mother to be a house cat, since we first adopted the kitties from a local rescue before they were weaned, so had 2 brothers and mom in our bedroom and decided to keep momma too.

2nd edit: we tried traps, they didn't work(rats and mice are clever). I have never had outdoor cats before, and I don't take the risks to them or local wildlife lightly. We are capped at 2 outdoor kitties, and there is PLENTY of wildlife around. The only think we know they have killed that wasn't a rat/mouse/chipmonk etc, was one of our rabbits. (Protip, if you have your rabbits in hutches on the ground, move them daily) The rabbit dug out of the hutch and one of the cats killed it.

I have mixed feelings about having cats outside, but we had a problem and they solved it. Life in the country sometimes isn't as easy or pretty as city life. No offene intended, and I appreciate your kneejerk reaction. Last year that would have been me questioning people's outdoor kitties.
