COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

I tend to limit my intake of standard news, as it tends to be quite repetitive. I do catch the news on the radio every few days whilst commuting.

The other day I heard something quite interesting, I’m not seeing or hearing it repeated but that could be because I’m not listening to much. What I heard tucked in the middle of some other info was that China has determined a link in the severe cases. High blood pressure. Ppotentially the reason children weren’t getting it severely. And also the reason that seniors get hit worst. High level of correlation 50% of the severe cases people had high blood pressure.

Well I have high blood pressure that would put me greatly at risk. And who knows exactly why the connection. But in any case that gives me guidance to improve my own personal chance of getting through this safely.

Anyway, seems like important information to share if it’s true, that there may be a distinct link between HBP and virus severity.

What you have tripped across has been long known with influenzas based and like illnesses. The combination of age and its accompanying illnesses most associated with being older and thereby having a weaker immune system allows these illnesses to target them. Clearly, this includes younger adults that also have these ailments.

It is important to remember that each year, the largest death toll from influenzas is the elderly.

High Blood Pressure affect a very wide range of age groups and commonly leaves those affected exposed to illnesses, which targets the cardiovascular system (which most people forget, includes the Lungs).

Sadly, although it is known, it is rarely reported.
It is important to remember that each year this group is high on the list of those recommended to get the Flu Shot each Fall!

Re: Wuhan virus

from CDC, hopefully this is true....

I'm not afraid of getting the virus its my pets I worry about, and the run on supplies, but I had a huge head start on that, I was way ahead of the curve.

But it looks like pets in general "might" be immune...

It says when caring for your pets to ā€œwear a facemask.ā€ Heh heh. And just where should we get those facemasks from, which were the first things unavailable since China ever first announced Quarantine? And which can’t even be found in doctors offices? However we’re supposed to suddenly have some handy for caring for our pet. Hm hum.

IF I wore a mask while caring for Noodles (since there are so many these days lol), it would be aggressively torn from my face (as are headbands from my hair and sunglasses from my head)---she is like "THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!!!!"

Re: Wuhan virus

I have a pre-scheduled, non-urgent but hard to get doctors appointment scheduled Tuesday. I also have an unrelated, possibly more urgent appointment scheduled Thursday. I’m wondering whether I should cancel both of these or perhaps just the non-urgent on Tuesday.

Depends on where you are, but if in the Midwest or somewhere with fewer infections, I would knock it out earlier rather than later if you have to have it within the next 3 months or so---just my opinion. I think numbers will increase....I wouldn't get there 15 minutes early ---I would make it fast as possible, leave my stuff in the car, get in and out without touching anything and wear a mask if you have one...BUT, IT DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU LIVE...Like, I wouldn't go to the doctor in CA, NY, WA or Chicago Il right now. I am sure there are more clusters...haven't checked recently on those specifics.

Re: Wuhan virus

Just wanted to share roughly how it feels to be an average Singaporean:

At least once (if not 2-3x) a day, we receive a WhatsApp (the main communication people use with friends, family, colleagues, and clients) message like this:
YaW5hnD.jpg

The first link there leads to this page: https://www.moh.gov.sg/news-highlights/details/one-more-case-discharged-thirteen-new-cases-of-covid-19-infection-confirmed-13Mar

It shares the current knowledge on the newest cases of the day as well as any updates of the cases announced previously.

Case 192

14. Case 192 is an imported case involving a 32 year-old male American national who arrived in Singapore on 10 March from the US. He was confirmed to have COVID-19 infection on 13 March morning, and is currently warded at NCID.

Case 181 (Announced on 12 March)

26. Case 181 is an imported case involving a 83 year-old male Indonesian national who had arrived in Singapore on 9 March. He is currently warded at Gleneagles Hospital. He is a family member of Case 182.

27. He reported onset of symptoms on 8 March while in Indonesia, and had presented at the emergency department of Gleneagles Hospital on 10 March. Subsequent test results confirmed COVID-19 infection on 12 March morning.

28. Prior to hospital admission, he stayed at Bukit Timah Road.

(Unfortunately, due to the irresponsibility of our neighbours, their citizens started coming here for testing and treatment.)

Update on condition of confirmed cases

47. To date, a total of 97 cases have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospital. Of the 103 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are stable or improving. 11 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Update on contact tracing for confirmed cases

48. Contact tracing for the confirmed cases is ongoing. Once identified, MOH will closely monitor all close contacts. As a precautionary measure, they will be quarantined for 14 days from their last exposure to the patient. In addition, all other identified contacts who have a low risk of being infected will be under active surveillance, and will be contacted daily to monitor their health status.

49. As of 13 March 2020, 12pm, MOH has identified 4,910 close contacts who have been quarantined. Of these, 1,491 are currently quarantined, and 3,419 have completed their quarantine.

Hey, fellow Seattle-area folks!

Hope you’re all well. Bunkering down with the kids and fids here. Crazy that schools are shut down for six weeks.

Re: Wuhan virus

Meanwhile , Charmedbyekkie, in Florida they no longer say numbers, the morning national news doesn't list cases by states, or give the total number of cases or the amount we increased by. For example yesterday we increased by over 520 nation wide....while news kept pointing out that UK rise by 200....

My State had 70, one more died.
A total of 70 Florida residents have now been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the latest Health Department numbers. They are spread among 19 of Florida’s

Re: Wuhan virus

All schools in Illinois are closed from the 17th -30th per governor.

Re: Wuhan virus

The US is shutting down. I just hope it works. Be safe, everyone. Keep your spirits up

Here in Poland all schools are closed since 12th. We have about 70 cases of coronavirus

Some people are crazy and buy 4 trolleys of food - because of them prices in markets are higher and higher.... but from what I know it's not only here

Interesting article suggesting a link between older men with high BP controlled with ACE inhibitors. Possible link between this class of drugs and COVID-19 using same cellular receptor. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...fGCFQA7bnN8j-sOeXedxiQ12rkaOylZPrMXx4gE125f9g

Re: Wuhan virus

Brazilian President Bolsonaro had dismissed the alarm around the virus as a "fantasy" spread by the media as recently as Wednesday.

A Deeply Felt THANK YOU, to the OP and each of the contributors of this Thread!

And, a special thank you to ' Laurasea ' who has spent extensive time researching and keeping us along the leading edge. Again, Thank You!

Each of your efforts has encouraged many of our Members and also 'Viewers' to take steps early to prepare for the rapid changes in advance and since the United States declaring a National Emergency...

Today, there are long lines at near all food stores and big box stores, some in which have had to have local law enforcement control access... Empty shelves are common and limits on qualities of high demand items common.

FYI: If you have face masks and are wearing it, please ensure you are wearing it correctly!!! You have wasted your money and limited the access to this product by our medical community AND not protecting yourself or others around you if you are not correctly wearing it...

I have high blood pressure and emailed my doctor as a result of this article. It isn't THAT high, and I have only been on medication for 2 months or so, but that whole ACE inhibitor thing is a bit disturbing. Thank you for posting!

Thank you Sailboats! And thank you those that sent me thanks by PM.
I just want you all safe! And the info in the beginning that was given out was confusing , and something misleading.
I have great faith now that every effort both government, business, and private is going into flattening the curve, and slowing this virus down..we are really coming together fast!

Big thanks to Bug N Flock for starting the concern early and the thread!! And to all who shared in it to. It's interesting to see the evolution of the thread, the thoughts, and the growing reality. One thing for sure we care about each other, and our Parrots!

For those younger , you do catch and spread the virus. So you need to practice social distance to. And we had a 25 year old hospitalized with the viral pneumoia, has been released from the hospital now. So some will have serious symptom's.

Florida interviewed some of our many spring breakers, they were in huge crowds, said they weren't worried at all. Some Florida cities are trying to encourage them to go home. It's a time to think of everyone's life. Things are changing fast, and I'm sure many are starting to see things differently.

On a good Florida news. It's beautiful here! And my tiny little Silver bells tree has one bud about to bloom! I'm so excited it will be the first silver bells bloom for the tree and me! It's one of our beautiful native trees. And I'm really excited for the one bloom , I thought I'd have to wait years!

Re: Wuhan virus

I was just at Wal-Mart and....holy crap.....it was CRAZY---totally empty lunchmeat/cheese aisle...like maybe 80 cans left in the canned food aisle....seemed eerie and almost post-apocalyptic in many ways.

Re: Wuhan virus

My mom sent me a picture her freind sent. It was empty shelves everywhere...
I hate so see big crowds gathering....
the shelves will be restocked, it's ok, you don't hs vto get everything now. Even in Italy they keep the grocery stores open

We have similar breakdowns here but it's easy to become falsely complacent simply because there are people with hardly any symptoms who do not realise they are infectious. Unless everyone is constantly tested there is no real way of having accurate numbers.
We are led to believe that there are far more around than the numbers suggest and I try to take precautions as far as I can. Sanitise your hands frequently, wash you hands with soap and hot water as often as you can and don't touch your face, eyes, mouth and nose. It's really hard to do so start training yourselves now. Your phone, keys, TV remotes, door knobs, light switches everywhere that you can think of. I wiped down my credit cards with soap/water yesterday when I got in as well as my card wallet and my handbag (purse). The leather apparently holds the virus.

Clean worktops twice with disinfectant not just once. My steam cleaner is permanently out and loaded for upholstery/carpets etc. Change towels particularly hand towels daily or more often depending on usage. Change out of outdoor clothes and shoes on entering the house and leave them in one area. I then steam them before they go in cupboards etc.

Don't forget the car. Steering wheel and any other parts you touch. I sanitise my hands before I get in the car to try and keep it as a clean area.

If you use facilities while you are out wash hands thoroughly but then use a tissue or something so you don't touch the door, or sanitise afterwards. After a few days of concentration it gets easier to think of the potential. These are guidelines that were given out on TV news by a doctor.
It's ok when you get into the swing of it.

Re: Wuhan virus

Just a reminder to everyone:

F10 has an ingredient that does manage COVID-19. It is a bird safe disinfectant, so feel free to use everywhere!

I've distributed F10 bottles to my colleagues and have been using in the office as well as at home.

Please don't use non-safe disinfectants around your birds or on areas your bird goes.

Re: Wuhan virus

Ok I I didn't think I'd have to keep adding stuff...
The tests are about 90% accurate, hey it's new and everyone is working fast. Also it can take several tests after you have symptoms for you to text positive.
A doctor with decade's of experience in New Jersey is trying to warn people! It's bad, it's highly infectious causes severe disease, he can't keep up with ICU cases testing. Worst thing he had ever seen!!
" Maron said the past week has been unlike any other in his more than four-decade career.

ā€œI can fall back on my cholera experiences in Haiti, which was devastating, considering the lack of basic medical supplies after the earthquake — and then the other things that came here, everything from MERS and SARS, and even when we ramped up for Ebola — this is unprecedented,ā€ he said. https://www.roi-nj.com/2020/03/14/opinion/life-at-the-epicenter-of-n-j-s-coronavirus-outbreak/
It’s why Holy Name CEO Mike Maron thinks all the attention the coronavirus has been getting in New Jersey — from the school closings, banning of public gatherings, suspensions of pro sports leagues and even the fights over toilet paper and bottled water — It’s why Holy Name CEO Mike Maron thinks all the attention the coronavirus has been getting in New Jersey — from the school closings, banning of public gatherings, suspensions of pro sports leagues and even the fights over toilet paper and bottled water — is not enough. Not even close..

Also as seen on news, will try and source
HALF the cases in the hospital in Italy are people under 60
Italy first case in their outbreak
In the Comments, Ramadori (2020) observes that: "... the first patient with COVID-19 pneumonia is a young marathon runner of 38 year of age." https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2763188

Pan said about 8 percent of the people who have come for coronavirus treatment have died. Some of the doctors have become his patients.
ā€œI’m afraid,ā€ he said. ā€œPeople say, ā€˜You can’t say you are afraid.’ I understand you shouldn’t say it. But it’s not a joke.
ā€œI hope not to die of this disease.ā€
