I posted recently about my female Eclectus, who screams almost nonstop, and I’m hoping someone with experience can help.
She screams from the moment she wakes up until she goes to sleep. If she hears someone talking, she screams. If she’s in her cage, she screams. When I let her out, she flies straight to the window and screams continuously. She even screams while flying.
The hardest part is that I live around other people. I personally don’t mind her noise, but I can’t expect my neighbors to feel the same, and I’m starting to feel a lot of pressure because of it.
I’ve tried everything I can think of. She gets 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep in complete darkness every night. Her diet is carefully managed, and she gets fresh vegetables first thing in the morning. She has plenty of enrichment and lots of toys inside and outside her cage.
She used to enjoy foraging and playing with her toys, but now she completely ignores them. The moment she’s out of her cage, she goes straight to the window and starts calling. If she hears wild birds outside, she screams even louder, almost like she’s trying to communicate with them.
She also spends a lot of time sitting on the bottom of her cage and becomes very territorial if anyone approaches her there.
I’ve spoken to several experienced breeders, and they all told me she’s sexually mature and is looking for a mate.
At this point, I’m genuinely wondering if that’s what she needs. If getting a male Eclectus companion would improve her quality of life, I’d be more than willing to adopt one. I hate seeing her like this, and I just want her to be happy.
Has anyone here experienced something similar with a female Eclectus? Did getting a companion actually help, or was the screaming caused by something else? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences before making such a big decision.
