Emergency!!!! Help please

Hello all! i just took my green cheeck conure to the vet today for disease testing and dna sexing and well i had the appointment at 330pm and its about 5 hours passed during the vet visit they said they could not get good blood sample due to the fact that he wasnt giving much blood (he/she is about 2/3 months old) but they did do a dna sexing. now about 5 hours after our visit he had blood coming out of his nose and sneezing it out i called the vet asap and they said it was probably that they punched an air sack... and that everything should be ok unless the blood keeps coming ... my question is, is that a real thing? like is it common for this to happen? have any of you experianced this? he isnt bleeding anymore and through the whole ordeal hes been acting normal for the most part just a little clumsy since he got his nails trimmed for the first time but you can see that there still is a little blood on he inside. i just feel like hes going to drown in his own blood but the vet said it is a common thing but i dont trust them anymore pls help!!!!

Punctured air sac while trying to draw blood?? NO it is not only "not" common, that is just unheard of. I wonder how they tried to draw blood to go that deep into the body? The veins that they draw blood from are not that deep from the surface . This was obviously not an avian vet. I'm so sorry this happened to your baby. Even though the blood has stopped, he should get checked out by an experienced avian vet asap to assess the damage and assure no infection had set in. There should never be blood coming from the nostrils of your pet after coming from the vet any more than you should end up bleeding in a similar way after a doctor visit.

What area of CA do you live in?

Yikes! I would highly recommend you take your parrot to a different avian specialist for, at a minimum, another opinion. Judging by the hour, you may need to seek an after-hours clinic with avian expertise. Depending on your locale in California, that may be a challenge.

I've never heard of such an outcome and hope it is not serious!

I live in LA i went to a VCA Vet, i take all my animals there even my other bird... Im going to keep an eye on him over night and go to a different vet and have him examined there in a week maybe i dont want to do it too soon because i dont want him to stress out, but if something happens then i will take him to a different vet asap. i was looking through his feathers and it seemed like they took it from the neck or under the wing on is right side? or something becuase its brusied very much and its swollen under the wing like a big welt and yea ugh i dont know i think it was the doc because she was a different one not the one i usually see

Are you willing to travel to Orange County? I can refer you to good avian vets if so...

They recommended me one in Culver City Called Access Vet, But please do tell me your vet as well more options the better. I dont care the distance i just want my friends to be happy and healthy!!!!

Also they claim that this particular facility does do avian so i choose this one. I live at another vet specifically for exotics but their avian vet is only there Thursdays and their hours are much shorter...

In fact, I have a list here (from the bird store I got Mink at), and it has a few recommended avian vets around the Santa Monica area. That might be closer to you than Orange County?

I don't know how good these vets below are, but I'm thinking they've all got to be more knowledgable than your last one !

Beware... As you've found out, not all vets who are willing to see birds, should be. I haven't heard of the ones here in the Los Angeles area, but the two in OC are my vets. Dr. Nemetz is one of 10 "avian only" practices in the US, and he's an expert. Dr Ikeda is an all animal vet, but impresses me with his avian experience and knowledge also.

Oh, and I've never been to Dr. Tom Greek, so I don't know of him first hand, but I've heard his name around, and he is recommended by the bird community too (714) 463-1190

I've never heard of anything like this, either. If they were trying to get blood from the area under the wing it's quite possible they might have punctured either an air sac or even a lung! (If you Google a diagram of Avian anatomy, you'll see just what I mean.) I would go to one of the avian vets Julie (RavensGryf) recommended as soon as possible, if I were you.

I am relieved that the bleeding has stopped, and I hope that's an indication that whatever damage was done has healed itself, but the swelling and bruising definitely worry me.
