I lost Sam, one of my Rosey Bourkes last night. I was in the room and heard a thump and ran to his cage, and he was on his back thrashing around on the bottom. I reached in to pick him up, and I held him for a minute and then he died in my hands. His neck was broken. I don't know if he slipped from his perch, or missed the perch he was flying to, or exactly what happened. I am devastated. He was such a sweet, sweet boy, and I loved him so much. His friend, Dean, is also devastated, and is still looking everywhere for him.
My heart is broken this morning. He was only 8.
Fly free, Sam...I love you.

I am so sorry for your loss :( It is always hard when we don't understand what happened. I hope that Dean will be okay soon.

Terry, I am so sorry for your loss of Sam:( Sam is flying free now and lived every day knowing he was loved and cared for.

How sad. Take comfort in knowing you loved him with all your heart.

So sorry… very sad. :( Sending you a big hug!

Terry, I'm so sorry to hear about Sam! Even harder not knowing exactly 'what' made this happen to cause the force to break his neck? Freak accident. Poor Dean too. That is very sad. So sorry :(

So sorry for your loss, Terry. Sam's life ended far too soon, but he was so lucky to be loved so very much while he was with you and to have Dean as a perfect companion.

Sam, fly free little Love.

I"m so so sorry for your loss. I hope Dean adjusts ok.

Sorry for your loss. Birds are such fragile things.

Oh no :( Is it possible he had a night fright? I'm not sure how common those are in Bourkes though..
Keeping you and your flock in my thoughts. Nobody here has a doubt in their mind that he was loved every day, and I'm sure he knew it. It's always hard when things happen and we just don't understand how or why.

I'm so sorry for your loss. *hugs*

Very Very Sorry Terry, Most of us here know this PAIN as deeply as you feel right now

Maybe all of our LOVE for you can at least give you some comfort

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I feel so fortunate to have people I can share this with who truly understand, and don't think that since I have other fids it shouldn't hurt as much.

@Ashley, He was prone to night frights, but the lights were still on when it happened, so I am unsure why it happened:(

Dean is still looking forlorn, but has stopped frantically searching the cage for him. Poor little guy, I so wish there was a way to explain to him, and help him through this.

I'm so sorry, Terry. :(

Gosh, that happened so quickly and out of the blue. I wish there was something I could say or do to make the pain go away. :(

HUGS to you, my friend.

Rest easy, beautiful Sam. You were much loved, and will never be forgotten.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Terry. Fly free precious little Sam.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you are doing ok, hugs.

Terry, so sorry to hear about the passing of Sam. Although he has left you way to early, please be comforted by the fact that he was loved and cherished each and every day by his wonderful mumma. Hopefully Dean is feeling some what more stable today.

Fly free little Sam.

My goodness, Terry, I am so sorry. I just saw this now. So very very sad :(
I hope you are doing OK, and that Dean is alright as well.

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the sorrow you are experiencing. Every time I hear a thump in my birds cage at night I have a little heart attack and run to check on him. I cannot even imagine what I would do if I found what you did. Fly free Sam </3
