Has anyone seen this!!?!?!

unbelievable! ive never liked chain pet stores, the only one i think is OK is petco. at least they know what they're doing and have employees for each kind of pet. at pet supplies plus they don't even know what kind of birds they carry or how to take care of them. at least that's how the one in my area is. i hope they get taken off the shelves!

I don't know how Petco trains their employees, but Petsmart trains their employees to take care of all animals... so one day you might do fish... another day the reptiles.... another day the birds.... etc So you cycle through all animals and depending on the day, you can be a 'specialist' for that animal without really knowing much about them... you are only taught basic care.

That alone disgusts me.... and you might be lucky to get a true "expert" (someone who knows more than the average scum off the streets who can follow rules) in one field for the animals...

Wow, I see one got deleted..not sure if the person deleted it or petsmart did...I don't really like Petco, I mean at least it doesnt sell candy covered treats for birds, but the petco near me sticks their birds in tiny plastic cages with one or two toys. They are usually just sleeping, its really sad. They do take really good care of their fish now though, there used to be dead fish everywhere but now they are always really clean. I don't know, i just don't really like chain pet stores.

I have seen (and ashamed to say, indulged) these for people but never in a billion years would think they would market them for birds. Crazy!!

I have read that the reason Petsmart doesn't sell dogs and cats is because there are too many of them already in shelters. If that is why, then why in the world do they sell birds? We all know the horrors that befall many unwanted and mistreated birds that people paid money for. Petsmart should help birds they way they do dogs and cats, by facilitating adoptions, and offering accredited trainers for birds as they do for dogs. It is truly SICK that they act as though they consider birds a short-life, throw-away animal.

This needs to change. Anyone have any ideas how to rally support to get them to treat birds as equals to dogs and cats. My gosh -- the birds they sell live either just as long or far far longer than the dogs and cats they stopped selling.

Sure, it's convnenient for buyers, but it also makes buyers out of people that aren't prepared to be a bird owner - and what's worse is they are buying from the guy or gal that was an expert in fish or rats or dog kennels just the day before -- not from someone that will be able to help them make an informed decision and preparations.

I agree, but they also don't treat all their dogs and cats the way they should either.
Discrimination against pitbulls is a huge problem at the moment with petsmart too.
Im just glad in I'm Australia and I'm not anywhere near a petsmart. I'd be walking in there throwing all the bad stuff off the shelves of something, LOl.

i agree about chain stores i really dont like them. however, my local petco is pretty knowledgeable and the employees are well educated on the animals care. however, i still hate shopping there because of where they get their pets from (sunpet). pet supplies plus has to be the worst pet store i have ever been to. the employees knew nothing about the birds, and didn't even know what species they were. its pretty much a bunch of kids that work there. I'm not saying all pet supplies plus employees are bad, ive met some good ones, but most of them were not fit to work there.

I left a message! Argh this makes me so ticked off...

Well I remember working at pet land-- a new York city shop and the training we had sucked,I knew a lot about birds,so people came to me to help customers about birds, but I remember we had to take a test and in the test it said name 5 things you sell with a bird
So I put
1 big cage
2 bird book
3 organic pellets
4 fake tree branches(java wood type)
5 planet pleasure bird toys

And I had to re take the test because they offered none of that at there store

I can even get into details but crazy stuff I seen there

All pet stores idc where at but all need to be fully knowlodge before entering this type of feld...
Like becoming a doctor you don't just do you get the right training

I live on long island and the only pet store I go to is petco in river head. Petco stinks at fish, betta fish. No nothing about them. The petco I go to has nothing bad , like sugar ..
When I went to get Pepsi and sprite from theyre a lady who specializes in birds did it, she was very nice but I didn't like the way she had to catch the birds, I know they were untamed but is it necessary to squeez them ? All of you are right, in petco they have members in each category , when I'm a bit older I want to go to work at petco for a short time, not as my permanent job but somthing to do. What I. Hate is that they feed they're bird just millet and seed. And the millet is availible to them all the time

Try the Petland here. Anyone can stick their hands in the parakeet enclosure and theyre deathly afraid of people. Everything, especially reptiles and betta is so dirty, full of poop, sometimes no food and especially with reptiles no water. It's a shame. They used to sell puppy mill puppies until we petitioned them to only adopt out dogs and cats from local shelters.

Its because of whats "mainstream". We all see those depressing dog & cat commercials for HSUS and other similar organizations about neglect and abuse and why you should adopt, but do you ever hear about neglect and abuse in parrots? NO! Most people who go into a store and see puppies for sale will walk out, whereas birds don't phase them.
