I am looking ro breed a red factor sun conure identical to the one in the second image (myko's aviary phillipines), The one towards the right in the first image is obtainable but the female I have is just yellow or natural. I have heard that breed red into red will get you darker red and that red into yellow will give you variation. What should I fo for with my options?
TIA

I have no idea, but maybe these folks might?

I believe the red factor is a semi dominant lethal gene. This is debatable. When breeding a red factor to a red factor there is a chance to get a super red bird that dies around weaning time. I am not sure if any have survived to adulthood. If you get that red factor and breed it to a normal you will still get roughly half dark factor but no super reds. I don't breed suns but I find genetics interesting. I would dig some more before playing with this mutation. A second theory is that a lethal gene is being passed with the mutation and could be separated allowing a super red to live. That is my understanding anyway

If you breed a red factor to a red factor there’s a chance the babies will be double red factor and those won’t last past weaning. If they are normal red factors then they live like a normal sun conures. I have red factor sun conures but mine are not as bright as that one.

Breeding red factor with red factor creates a more red variations but it also creates a deadly gene that kills the offspring. They won’t last past weaning but the deadly gene kills them. It’s much safer to breed yellow with red.

The deadly gene is in about 25% of the offspring. The rest will be red factor. My understanding is that red to red won’t make darker babies. It will just pass on the shade of red that the parents have. So in order to get that very dark red you need to find a very dark red factor and then breed it with a normal sun conure.

I hear it's very sad to watch what happens to those chicks that get the fatal gene combination. They almost get to fledgling age then starve, wither and die slowly and there's nothing you can do. Not worth it trying to get a redder bird.

Yeah they can’t metabolize the food.

I did random reading about red factor conures. Part of my habit of learning weird and near useless information with a high degree of curiosity. I stopped counting after 6 general information sites. All were about purchasing, with stress on reliable breeder, obtaining (if given) hereditary info etc. The sites were like advertisement for these birds. None mentioned this gene factor. It upset me more then a bit. How can Mr/Ms Average make informed decisions. It's bad enough that too many don't bother to look up information.

I have the same weird habit of acquiring (mostly) useless information. I'm like a sponge, and old sponge at that! It's amazing how much I can hold and what comes out when you wring me!

It’s so hard to find information about the red factor sun conures. Even when you try and research it there’s not much out there. I have researched too and I have talked to other bird people. I guess some breeders will pair red to red because it guarantees that the babies are mostly red factor but there’s the 25% chance of bronze. The red factors are worth more so it’s usually a money thing or an accident. The babies that are red factor that are born to two red factor parents are completely fine.
There are also blue sun conures but finding information On those is even harder to find than information on red factors 😅

My great great grandmother mother told me to always learn something everyday day. Learn something you like, might like and dislike. It didn't matter what. Just learn. Her prime examples of might like was indoor electricity and plumbing. So learn to learn, you'll never know when that useless information will come in handy.

I can't imagine a breeder setting up birds to breed knowing that about 25% of the chicks will perish in a terrible way just to create more valuable surviving chicks. That's so unethical and inhumane!

I believe the only wasted day is the one that you don't learn something. No matter how trivial.

I’ve heard that people do it. I’ve also heard that people will put a bunch of birds together and let them pick their mate. In that case they could pick a mate that might also be a red factor.
