Kiwi's Trip to the Vet :(

Kiwi is probably fine now, but your anger will linger for awhile. I'm sorry there isn't a closer avian vet for you. I would see if going across state lines is closer. Sometimes it is. I'm closer to Detroit, MI than to say, Cleveland, OH.

Poor Kiwi and Mommy!! I am so sorry that happened to you! :(

I wonder why you can't observe. At Ohio State you can even watch surgery though the observation window. We watched my friend's horse have colic surgery from the moment we arrived with her until we knew she had come out of the anesthesia and was ok.

Very funny in a way to see them lift a horse off a stretcher and onto an operating table. They also put on the little disposable booties like they give us before surgery onto the horse's hooves.

I was in the surgery, when I had two male rats neutered... Sort of assisted... lol...

I've assisted a few times, although, not really a good thing for me. I am very emotional, and I hate all things inside of bodies (bones, muscles, organs, which is why I did not become a vet). But, I had a dog with bladder stones, who seemed to always need surgery in the middle of the night (he especially liked to choose holidays). So I had to assist the vet. And of course with farm animals, you do as well when they are neutered. The horse was bad enough, but my poor pot belly pig, ugh! Theirs are on the inside and pigs can't be sedated. So here we are holding this poor guy upside down and the vet makes two quick incisions and rips them out and throws them over my fence. I almost fainted. The next day he called and said, "I'm sure your pig is fine, but have you recovered?"

Im so sorry to hear about your terrible experience. Please do us a favor and post reviews on the vets you use. I know from experience that its really difficult to find a vet good with certain animals, and when the closest avian vet is 2 to 3 hours away, quite a few people, me included, choose someone closer. If theres a bad review on google or when i search the vet, i avoid them. You may be able to save someone from making your mistake.

Ive heard Burge bird services is supposed to be really good vet.Depending on if your near KC this might be an option. Its a 4 hr plus drive for us so out of the question.

I'm glad Kiwi is doing better! I bet it was scary for the poor birdie. I guess I've gotten lucky with everyone Puck has seen. With his recent illness, the only place that treats birds on the weekends is a 24/7 place, and some of the vets only "treat birds", although there are spe******ts staffed there too, but they're not there all the time. He ended up seeing 3 different vets in 3 different visits, although it wasn't until the 3rd visit that they figured out what was wrong with him...

Well I plan to do research and anything I can to keep people from taking birds to the vet I used the first time. Solomon Valley Vet Animal Hospital in Beloit Kansas is great with cats, dogs, cows, horses etc. However, care for birds or other exotics is NOT recommended.

Your way up there past Clay Center then..Kind of far from everything..We are about an hour South of Manhattan..We have two vets and they are super great but not with anything beyond the norm..They wont even see chickens.Which is kind of weird..

I found my current avian vet on-line. I wasn't too happy with the first one we were going to, he took Amigo into the back to do his check-up and I was uncomfortable about that. When checking on-line under avian vets, in my area, he wasn't on the list!

I love my current vet, she's very good with my bird and she also gives me a choice, do I want to be in the room while she is checking him or would I rather not. Of course, I stayed.

I meant to add, how sorry I am for both you and Kiwi, those kind of yucky experiences are hard to get over, but I'm sure Kiwi still loves you, she's just a little bruised right now.

Bruised to say the least. If she comes out of her cage now she'll sit on my shoulder for about 5 minutes and if I try to pet her she bites me. When I say ouch she stops but still. Its been a while since she has bit me. I'm just going to be so much more cautious now about who I decide to take her to. If I have to drive to Manhattan I will. I drove to Manhattan to buy her, its only about a 2 hour drive for me if even that. Doris, if you wouldnt mind, can you please share with me the name of vet that you use for your birds? And thank you in advance.

Pete was very upset after his last vet visit. Although I don't think it was so much the vet as the trip home in extremely high winds that upset him. It was just roaring around my truck and sounded frightening even to me. And we saw 2 trucks get flipped over as well. For 3 days he was so upset he was nipping me and throwing pellets at me. I just had to back off and interact with him from across the room until he forgave me. He loves when I sing to him so I sang for him a lot. Also for the first time he kept saying in this very upset sounding voice, "I good boy! I good boy!" Now every time I get that carrier out for Merlin he will say it again. Now that it's warm out, I am going to really need to work on him with going in it and having good experiences.

So Kiwi will forgive you. I know how upsetting that is though. Here I had only had Pete for 2 months and I was worried he might not forgive me, but he did.

It just really breaks my heart that we made all of this progress and then that stupid vet had to go and upset her and now we are back to square one basically. Oh well, I'll just keep doing what I've been doing and she'll come around for me again. I'm still furious though.

OH MY GOSH!!!! Thant is horrible! What kind of an idiot would do that! Your not a bad bird mom, you just didn't know how irresponsible, idiotic, creep would do that! Im so sorry that happened! Wow just wow!

:( :( How irresponsible and unfeeling of the vet. It makes me sad to think there folks like that out there.

When my pet rat was sick with a tumor, I took her to a supposedly excellent vet. She was nice, but her staff was inexcusably rude and unfeeling. They kept taking pictures of her and giggling at them saying how cute she was and asking if they could post it on facebook. Really? My pet rat is dying and that's all you can think about. I told them absolutely not, walked out and never looked back.

Unfortunately I had to put her down, but I found another vet, who euthanized her very kindly, and gave us as much time as we needed with her in the back room. His staff walked in and out getting supplies, but none of them bothered us, just gave us our privacy. What a world of difference

Oh no! Poor thing. You must have been SO upset for her. What is the worst part, to me, is that the vet should have simply been up front. If he had just stated that he was not experienced with birds, all the stress would have been avoided. I am lucky to live very close to a good avian vet (probably get there in 10 minutes or less). It is definitely worth your finding someone bird-specific. They really are quite different in terms of veterinary care.

Awe that is so upsetting to even read. I would have been really really upset too! :C

That's horrible.. I'm sorry that you and Kiwi had to go through that. I'm glad you didn't pay though!! Good for you. That's horrible. Yeah, wrote a review and hopefully that will save other people from going through that.
