Hello all,

So I've been learning how to make a lot of different things using crochet ie potted plants. My hooligans love getting into my plants so I've placed them where they can't reach them. I'm wondering if I use jute cord to make different objects and toys, are there any possible concerns?

I also want to see if average food coloring dyes you pick up at stores are safe or if I need to special order something for it.

Picture is a flower made of yarn. I want to make things like this using jute cord.

hmm.. well i crochet and i gave some yarn toys to Pebbles, and everything seemed fine but her nails get trapped in the yarn.

Using Jute should be fine, but just make sure that they can't get their nails caught in it. I use food colouring from the store on all my toys, but I add it into a little 70% isopropyl alcohol. That helps them to dry a lot faster - just make sure to let them completely dry out before offering them to your birds

Please be really careful when using yarn - as you mentioned, their nails can get caught and I would also worry about whether the dye they use on it is safe for birds. I would be afraid to risk it

I've found that my cockatiel just likes to pick them up and throw them. I'm thinking about making a mobile or something similar.

I am a crochet-a-holic. Blankets, dolls, pillows and more are my thing. One day my CAG invited herself as my assistant. She ran off with whatever hook I was using. To satisfy her I had to crochet her a swatch in the color of whatever. I read dyes were bad. Somewhere or someone told me that yarn, thread and cloth could cause crop issues. I don't know if that is true. Never checked it out. I use parrot safe products. My CAG has her own set of hooks to 'assist' me. She has to have the exact same size, style, color and brand of hooks. Why? I don't know. She doesn't even chew the bamboo hooks. Before I start a project I crochet a small swatch and let her see me do it. I repeat as necessary. Naturally I don't have the colors. I use parrot safe cord, leather, jute, and the like bought in bulk from parrot stores. I even have used extra large jumbo hook and crochet parrot safe rolls of paper. I have crochet single leaf like your pattern. She loves to meticulously pick them apart. My CAG loves her crochet toys. Like anything else safety is the priority. If yours love the toys and you enjoy making them then look into bird safe materials. If mine is especially annoying I thread beads, blocks, birdie bagels and more on them. Her goal is to remove them intact before decimation. I can get days of peace.
