how to convince someone NOT to get a parrot?

Oh, how awful! I hate when people go into getting a pet with the mindset that if it doesn't work out for them the animal is disposable anyhow, so no big deal.... SIGH.

I agree with everyone else, make sure they hear EVERY horror story you can come up with...and remind them that if the bird does bite it could result in the loss of a finger....

I hope you can dissuade them!!!!

Some people just dont understand parrots! I got mine when i was 10, im 18 now, and i plan on keeping them till i die, when i said i wanted to buy one i ment it and was fully aware of what i was getting myself into. no one knows the meaning of commitment!! Everyone thinks parrots are cool, they talk their beautiful big and awesome creatures but in reality they are extremely difficult! Not any and everyone should have one. Especially the people im talking about, they dont know one thing about ownership nor do they care, they just want it so they can show it off like their rich or something? She is easily intimidated by birds, even my green cheek she just likes them to sit pretty and be quiet, he wont even hold mine because i think hes scared but doesnt want to admit it. They can be abusive to their dogs they feed them junk, the kids like to intaginize and be mean to animals, they know better to be mean to my animals they learned the hard way. Im so frusterated with the situation!! I dont want to see another bird in a bad place!

Let them spend a day with your bird, show them how demanding a bird can be.
Explaining they need constant care and attention as well as quality time each and every day with a set routine.
Let them know the bird requires a diet, only eating certain foods and well as vet visits which could be very costly.

That's very unfortunate for the kids to have parents like them....I'm very strict with kids, my neighbor's little grand daughter was trying to poke at my dogs with a stick and I screamed at her to drop the stick and do not poke through the fence again. My dogs are super good with kids and that's a false move to make my dogs hate kids. Unfortunate for my best friend, the new house they moved to had bad neighbors where their son almost poke out their dog's eye with a stick. They had a talk with his parents and when they went on vacation, she had her dad over watching the animals and someone poisoned him so it's very likely the family behind did something evil to poison him but they had no proof. When my dogs are outside, i'm out there with them. We always patrol the yard to make sure there's nothing being tossed in the yard for them to eat. Some people are plain evil.....

If these people are as impulsive as you make them out to be, then letting the conversation drop and ignoring the issue altogether might be enough to stop the momentum.

I would just tell them that they are dangerous and will inflict bodily injury. My cousins wife had the idea now in her head to get a bird since she had seen pictures of my Amazon. She is super responsible and I know she soups meet the needs of the pet. I rolls her a Amazon probably wouldn't be good with their child but a cockatiel is much friendlier and easier to handle. Being the responsible person she is, she is reading about Cockatiels and is taking my advice.

Going by your description of them, they sound very self-centered people who take self-gratification as a way of life so I doubt that anything you say and/or show them would make any difference. How did you end up been friends with people like that? I would run away from them if I met them -LOL

Guide them to get a parrot that you would like to have. Then when they dump him in a couple months you'll have the bird you want!

What horrible people! I hate it when parents do not teach their children empathy for all animals and that it's our responsibility to be kind and humane to those who cannot speak or defend themselves.

I doubt that anything you say will dissuade them at this point. At least you tried.

these people should not have any animal ... ! talk about about the mess and bitting an the work like its no problem. not that its a problem:grey:
