Domnijoe - The Art Studio and Bird Herder's Residence

And if we don't have the room for more small cages, WE BUILD THE CAGES BIGGER!!!!
Not me. My first cage and only primary cage is nearly large enough for me. Now I'm spending money, time on that perfect travel cage. I'm limited by it's tota weight. Nameliss limits me due to her primary vocation as a disassembly expert. My current one is holding up so far

MY coop arrived today! It's not perfect and might require some adjusting from the basic idea, but what I got is working for now. My major complaint is that its bars are so wide that Winter can lick Vortex, so she's on leash when Vortex is out. But 'Tex is happy! So much to do! Explore! Burn off excess energy! The thing is so freaking huge, I had to overlap it in the middle because it was almost a foot too long for my space. Despite this, the blasted thing is almost 7-8 feet long.

Here's a good view of the bar spacing with Vortex modeling:

And the chicken coop itself:

The coop is powder-coated. And I have some boxes I can flatten and use to stick under the cage, where the newspaper is. It should do me some good :D.

Well, Yvons isn't having anything with me picking him up and bringing him to the coop. He refuses to leave his cage. Gonna try again in about 1/2 an hr.

I bet if Yvonn sees is flock members playing in it, he may change his mind. That thing looks huge.

I'm gonna give it a few days. Make sure he sees Vortex and the old farts, Charlie and Redshift, play in it if Charlie and Red will even let me get near the thing. I move a box and sweep and Tetris the bird room... not a peep. Show them the coop, and they flip out. Even Vortex was a touch bitey today.

Speaking of bitey... Quasar's new nickname is 'Mosquito', for the number of times he's tried to draw blood.

The coop has two major flaws with it, now that I've had time to use it and experiment with Vortex. The first is that it has no door in the roof. WHich is awkward because you have to crouch to pick up the bird(S) in question. The second is that my birds are stick trained (in theory, anyway. It doesn't always work out that way), and if they're avoiding the stick, they fly alllll the way to the back of the cage, where I can't reach them. This thing has 3 doors on 3 sides of the coop and it's NOT easy trying to capture the experimental bird when she's stubborn.

I think I will put foraging toys on the bottom of the far end of the cage, so if I have to run around and capture my brats, and they fly to the top of the cage, it's close to the main door. :) Perches and toys are hanging there, and it's easy to reach.

And It's quite clear that I've failed to continually stick train Vortex . She was NOT IMPRESSED with me today. I did some practice with her and fed her almonds about 1/2 an hr ago, which she willingly did.. kinda. I think I scared her when I took her to my friend's place and just popped her in her carrier. This was about a month ago. Oy. No wonder she was so cranky with me today! To be fair, I was trying to get her used to new situations, but I may have gone too far. Poor Girl.

Well, lights out for the Dinosaurs. Will update again later. Or tomorrow :D.

Well, things are tickety-boo here at Domnijoe :D . Vortex bit me yesterday because she didn't want to be taken out of her cage. But she enjoyed her time out of the cage enormously. Yvons is still refusing to be taken out of his cage at playtime. Ah well. As long as Vortex enjoys the Coop!

I'm searching for a better cover for Quasar's cage. I've noticed he's slept better since fixing the old cover and replacing it with something bigger and darker. But he's still up at the crack of dawn, often playing before the others are awake!

Looking for a Vet closer to me. It's looking like I might have to stick with my regular vet because EVERYONE is out across town. Not a problem when you drive, but for me, it's 3 buses and about an hour and a half to get out there! OY! My poor Arthritic boi...

I understand, however, why you want one of those babies. I don't know why you rushed into getting Quasar, who seems to be a biting wild child. And then you see Teeko. .

Vortex was a baby when you got her so she should be your tame, fun, human bonded bird. Is she? How often do you take her out and play with her, hands on?

I got Quasar because I felt that I could provide him with a decent home and train him to be less problematic. While I understood he wouldn't be 100% tame, I knew I could help him not fear people as much. One man's Garbage is another Man's Treasure type of thing, you know? I didn't realize how much of a raptor he was, LOL!!

As for Vortex - she's a charmer! I play with her every day, though I haven't continued hands-on training with her like I should have. Everything's been with a stick. I'm changing that, due to Yvons :) .

I'm thankful for this conversation! I'm going over old BirdNerdSophie videos to see how I can help my bond with my brats... Quasar especially. Turns out I've been doing some things wrong. Things that were normal 20 years ago. **Cringes**

We all do things wrong with our birds. Im glad you are giving Quasar a better home. He probably will never be like Teeko or Ona but I hope hes happier.

One thing for sure is that one human being can only do so much. Each bird we add to our home takes one on one time away from the birds we already have.

I keep telling myself one is enough. More are not practical, financially or otherwise. But every time I see a picture of birdies that need a home I just can barely restrain myself. I remind myself of the vet bills for just one, and how that would multiply. I nearly had two at the same time.
But.
Sigh.
I feel your pain.

Yes! And so many need new homes. It's sad as heck :'(

It’s definitely hard to resist. It comes from a place of love…we all love birdies very much!

SO I'm revamping my approach with Vortex to an updated method of handling and not chasing her around when it's time to play in the Coop. She's sitting at the door with confusion and suspicion because, usually, I'm trying to get her out with a stick. Maybe some almonds will convince her that the cage door isn't gonna eat her. (SHe's readily accepting almonds from me as I write this! YIPPIE!)

I'm kicking myself for NOT applying knowledge I knew about parrot handling. Vortex seems to have forgiven me, tho
:)
