Scarlet Macaw Breeding Pair
3x Baby Macaws laid and born this August 2022
3x Baby Macaws laid and born this October 2022
I currently have 3 baby scarlet macaws and thinking about keeping some while trying to sell some to try to build up a savings for a Hyacinth breeding pair.

Any idea of prices of baby Scarlet macaws? When they are most expensive? ---When they are right after weaning? When they learn how to fly and get training?

Mine are currently 10, 13, and 16 days old.

I live in SoCal, USA.

Do you handfeed them?

Baby scarlet macaws start weaning at the age of 3 months old. This means that the bird can learn to start pecking at whole food and digesting it on its own, and the formula can be eliminated. However, the weaning process should be a slow one. Start by offering formula in a bowl rather than through a syringe or pipette. You may still need to hand-feed the bird for a couple of weeks between bowl feedings to ensure that it is getting enough calories and nutrients.
Baby scarlet macaws usually cost about 2.000$-4.000$.

Birds need to choose when they're ready to start eating whole foods. You shouldn't lower formula in order to get them to eat solids, unless the birds doesn't want formula anymore.

You need to find some Macaw breeder groups and find a mentor who will help you on this journey. Too many people think if they have a male an female who lay eggs, everything is down hill and only see the $$$ signs. There is a ton to properly raising babies. Are you doing daily weights and recording that each day along with the amount they are eating?

Yes I am and I agree. Been trying to find forums and groups to try to get more info but I am more of a hobbyist rather than "breeder". I had my pair of scarlets for 6 years and just last year did they start "breeding" behavior and laid infertile eggs. This year I got 3 fertile that I was able to get them hatched.

Also, just wanted to know price because I do want to work up to owning a pair of Hyacinth macaws since those are my dream birds.

Pictures of the babies today, 9/4/2022. Also verification for forum.

Those babies are so cute! I can't wait to see photos as they start to get their little pin feathers. Hopefully all 3 turn out strong, and healthy.

Sorry. Have not been the greatest poster on this forum. Been hanging out on a few others.

Update pictures. Soooo many pin feathers on the eldest one and the second one is also getting its tail and flight pin feathers. Eldest one having red crown feathers coming in and eyes are more open and responsive.
Pictures taken today 9/11/2022.

I strongly disagree about weaning macaws at 3 months old, macaws usually only start at 6-9 months, sometimes even later.

This is where you really need to be careful advising on subject you don’t have experience with. Fact of the matter is that macaws can start weaning that early. Doesn’t mean they’re fully weaned, just that you they can start. This is where language matters. “Weaned” can mean start weaning, or end fully wean depending o t he question.

However, they actually can wean fully wean that early on their own. Especially smaller ones (down to 10 weeks), but even bigger ones can push down 12-16 weeks in exceptional cases.

You can’t paint with broad strokes, my friend. Language matters!

YES! Thank you @chris-md.
There is a much of scattered information across macaw babies and breeders posting their way of raising them up. I am currently in touch with 2 veteran macaw breeders and both have hatched and raised at least 20 macaws each so the knowledge I get from them plus the itty bitty information I know of macaws....I feel pretty confident in raising these baby macaws as healthy and strong as they can be and will be ecstatic when the second clutch starts hatching as well! Practice make perfect while research research and do more research! Also ask questions to anything you may have a question or idea on!!!

What cute babies. Looking forward to seeing more photos of the little tykes. Welcome to the forums, since I haven’t said it already. :)

From what I knew, macaws get weaned later. Well, where ever I learnt that, the person was misinformed.

Oldest have started to get full pin feathers with grey body. Redder crown feathers and larger pin feathers. Day 26

Second growing more pin flight feathers. Tail pin feathers getting bigger with slight color change at the tips. Day 23

Smallest has its eyes opening up. Pin feathers still yet to come but size and weight is catching up to second oldest. Day 20

Little guy didn’t get the memo of facing the right direction!

Wow time flies. Got sick around 10 days ago and barley been feeling better and had my family help take care of the baby macaws. How much they have grown and changed since last update!

They are 37, 40, and 43 days old.

Also next clutch of eggs are starting to hatch. First egg hatched yesterday and its currently day 2. Second egg of the clutch has been moved to the higher humidity chamber with no rotation and the baby macaw is starting to break the egg. Should be hatching either midnight or early tomorrow on 10/1/2022
